Thanks for posting Stu Craig. This post explains a lot of the reasons there are so many of us hard-core Beth fans out there. This was posted back in 2003. Since then Beth had to struggle with some serious issues with bipolar disorder and inpatient treatment for that, along with serious depression and the working out of different meds to find the right one. Her therapist felt that she had been trying to self-medicate since she was a child to feel "normal." The great thing about Beth is she shares this stuff with her fans in interviews and in her music and it helps a lot of people. The song Like You on the My California album is specifically about bipolar.

P.S. One thing I wanted to add about the song mentioned in the review "If God Only Knew" - it's about her father who had no contact with her after he got out of jail while she was growing up. The song has a totally different meaning once you know that.
