Topic: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Okay, so in just over a month's time I will finally get my redundancy pay out from work (seems like it's been forever) so will be getting a Les Paul and a new amp.

Les Paul wise I've spent the last couple of weekends trying a few different models and, while I'd love to get the new JB Standard when it lands, I decided to go for a Gold Top Traditional and possibly upgrade the pickups to a set of BareKnuckle Mules I have sat in a box already but will give the Classic 57's a fair trial first and may or may not swap out the plastic parts for black...

On the amp front I'm still undecided though...I don't currently have one so this would be my only amp and I am not too bothered about it being suitable for practise at home (I'm moving to a house in the country soon anyway so no neighbours to worry about) but I would want it to be suitable for gigging.

I'm not currently in a band, but intend to do my best to put a blues-rock band together in the next 12 months and want an amp that will cope with a wide range of styles. I'm not looking for insane amounts of distortion, the heaviest I'd go would be Bon Jovi...

As well as the LP, I will also be playing a Strat and a Tele (though I expect the LP to become my main guitar as has been the case previously when I've had one) and want a good clean sound (think John Mayer - Slow Dancing In A Burning Room) as well as a good thick OD sound. In the past I've usually used the clean channel with a Tubescreamer for the Strat and Tele and then set the OD channel up for the LP and that is how I would intend to work this time around as well.

My first choice of amp for the past decade has always been a Fender and I came very close to buying an "Evil Twin" last year but it fell through when my car needed work doing on it. They're usually available on eBay for around £4-500 so would be the cheapest option, but I'm not sure about the OD sound from these as I've only ever used the clean channel and a TS. Around this price as well as Fender Deville's but I've only had chance to play through the new Mk3 versions so would welcome any feedback on the older ones (also comparison of 2x12" vs 4x10").

The other obvious choice of amp would be a Marshall. A friend of mine a few years back had a Vintage Modern and I loved it, but I'm a little concerned about versatility when switching between Strat/Tele and LP and not being able to get a clean sound I'm happy with. Other options would be a DSL50 or DSL100 or a TSL60, though I would prefer a combo rather than head and cab (but that's not a deal breaker and there are pros and cons to each)...the JVM's seem to be just out of my price range even though the option to tie one up with a Boss GT multi-effects and use Midi switching is very appealing!!

2 other options that have come up when I've been looking around are the Blackstar Stage 60 (2x12" combo) and the Egnater Renegade 2x12" combo. I like the ISF feature on the Blackstar and the Stage 60 has 2 OD channels so I could potentially use one of these with the Strat/Tele and do away with OD pedals. The Egnater appeals to me because it has a Tube Blend option so I could have the clean channel set with a 6L6 based sound and the OD channel an EL34 based sound (ie best of both worlds)...

So what do you all think? My combined budget for guitar and amp is about £2000 and I've managed to get a local store to agree to match Thomann's price on the LP (whatever it is on the day - at present it's hovering around £1300) so that leaves around £700 for the amp (I'm happy to buy the amp 2nd hand as I would try it first)....

Over to you...

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

FWIW i have a Blackstar HT stage 60 and i couldnt be happier with it, nails everywhere from clean blues to rock to the Joe B stuff. Highly recommended and great value. Id recommend putting an EQ in the loop though, just tightens up the sound nicely and makes dialing tones that much easier.

I use a Les Paul standard and a Strat through it, sounds great with both.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

I'd look at Andy Fuchs Blackjack MKII. Amazing amp. Boutique tone at a bargain price.
Second choice - DSLs. Way underrated for what they are. Pure rawk smile
The only downside is that like every Marshall they sound best cranked to at least 6-7. And that's loud.
As always YMMV.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

I have a honest suggestion that might sound silly but the new 5150 ver. 3 EVH sounds almost exactly like a Marshall DSL in channel 2 and the clean channel has that classic Fender clean tone, while ch. 3 is a burn channel that is a ton of gain.  check out this demo of a marshall vs.  the 5150  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l5KnwZ94Cw

Now check out this video with Gary Hoey who btw is the freaking man.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj6EI5Z9zcQ

Its worth it to me just for a clean fender sound and a marshall dirty sound in a EVH approved amp!

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

I've played most of them and my personal favourite is the Fender Deville 2x12, by far the best clean tone and IMHO the nicest crunch and heavy crunch tones... I really warm organic amp!

All the best from Aus,

- Stef

Yeah Gary Hoey is a great player. He is a friend of mine lives close by and has been over my studio. He will be releasing a killer Blues DVD in a few months it is going to be awesome. I will let everyone know when it's out.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Stef, which version of the Deville have you played through, or does the above go for all of them?

Synchu, great suggestion and I'd love a Fuchs amp, but just too far outside my price range...

It was the new 2x12 and was superb! This is coming from a Marshall guy too!

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

You would get a used JVM Combo in your price range mate, that would be my suggestion, I had a Fender tweed blues deluxe and while the cleans were great I just dont think you would be happy with the beefier side of things from the fenders. Try and have a look at the Blackstart Artisan's as well, you might scoop a second hand one in your price and I think they are very fine amps indeed with superb vintage tones and very flexible.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Another amp you may wish to consider is the Mesa/Boogie Lone Star.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Just realised I didn't say that I was meaning the Fender Hot Rod Deville, not the Blues Deville....

Zen...absolutely, but way too expensive....if I could get one of those in budget then I'd be a very happy bunny!!

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Look for an old Blackface Fender Bassman Head.  Throw a few of the right pedals in front of it and you are there.  There is something to be said for hand wired amps and the old Bassmans and Bandmasters are still the best amps going for the price.  Early silver face models are good too.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Well, thanks for all the great advice guys, but after spending an hour and a half in a guitar store this morning trying a Fender Hot Rod Beville III, couple of Blackstar amps and few different Marshall amps with both a Les Paul and a Strat, I think I've narrowed it down to a Blackstar Stage 60 2x12" combo.

Does it nail every tone I'm after? Well, no, however it gets very close to all of them and does get some of them as close as I can ask without spending a lot more money...

May even be able to run a setup with only a pedal tuner in front of the amp (and delay in the loop) since when I set the amp up for an OD sound I liked with the LP and then switched to the Strat the only issue was the drop in volume level...well that's easy to sort...either a boost pedal in the loop or even simpler - change the Master volume when switching guitars...!! That said I would probably leave the TS out front anyway just in case I felt the need for a little extra kick..!!

So now just the haggling to sort!!

Just be careful with Blackstar, a friend of mine has had his Series One Combo in and out of the repair shop regularly, from problems like dodgy pots, jacks and a faulty FX loop.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

They come with a warranty and if it does happen that there's any issues then I'll deal with that later...I don't tend to be that hard on my gear so I'm willing to take a chance. It's so much amp for the money that to get the same versatility from any other decent make of amp I'd have to buy second hand and then I'm not covered by a warranty...

And I had a Fender Blues Deluxe RI where the main board cracked...so it can happen to any make of amp...

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

I don't think you'll be disappointed Blackstars sound really good.  Not the greatest cleans but the overdrive sounds are pure Marshall.

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

Great choice, as I say I've loved mine, and theyre among the best value amps out there.

Hope you get a great deal on it!

Re: Fender vs Marshall vs Blackstar vs Egnater

I like Blackstar too.  I didn't chime in earlier since I have the low watt HT5R.  It sounds great and does have a nice Marshall roar.  Haven't had it all that long, but looking at build quality, I expect it to be durable.  I'd be interested to read your comments after you have had it for a while as my son is going to be looking for something in the same area as you around the end of the year.
