Topic: Josh Doyle

Here's one for you all; though I've mentioned the name a few times earlier in the year, Josh Doyle. A singer/songwriter living out in the wilds of Tennessee: had some success over 10 years back with a band called The Dum Dums, but kind of retreated from all that and worked away at getting himself how he wanted to be. He's released a handful of independant, home-grown albums an E.Ps, gathering praise and plaudits enough to break cover again. Musically, not "blues" as would be described, maybe more "americana", I don't, so I'll let Josh tell it:-

"Thirdly, my debut album is out WORLDWIDE on Tuesday, October 23rd. I've gone with eponymously titling the record "Josh Doyle" because it represents a new start, a new sound. "Solarstorms" is definitely one of the more commercial leaning tracks, but the whole record goes from stripped down, brutally honest acoustic, to anthemic rock, to even a country folk vibe. It's kind of "me" but the best "me" I could ever possibly put on tape. No fillers. I had the opportunity to record it with legendary musicians the old fashioned way: live tracking in a legendary studio with great vintage equipment. I cant wait for you to hear it."

You can get a taster of what Josh has been doing in the past from these links:-

Re: Josh Doyle

Gateshed; The Central - 22/6/14

Well, he offered; we asked; he answered. Finally a chance to see Josh Doyle in my backyard after beating a drum for him for a couple of years; and yes, its been well worth it to catch the guy in a stripped down show.

So, the man, his guitar in one of the weirdest shaped rooms I've ever been in, and a really good kick-back show after a hectic week-end. Despite the set back of a broken string early in the set (the ghost of The Central, "Randy Andy"), Josh hit his stride with the small, but loyal, almost family-like fan audience and laid out some real gem performances of tracks like Solarstorms, Everyone's Alone, Bird of Prey, I Figured The World Out, Meaning Of Life & I Want To Break Your Mended Heart from his current album as well as slightly older stuff like Concrete Moon and a re-visit to his days in The DumDums and a new track from album-in-progress and the one cover of the night, from James Taylor's catalogue.

Again, just another one of those intimate shows where the artist really connects with his audience and you feel that you're part of an exclusive club. Yes, a little "off the reservation" for regular tastes on here, but someone I'd recommend you take a chance to investigate if he's passing your way; Manchester, Bristol & London this week (last chance in the UK for a while), look out for his "D.I.Y. Tours" or full band shows.

Re: Josh Doyle

One of my favourite singer/songwriters is back after a couple of years lay-off and hitting the UK roads in April; Josh Doyle is doing a short run of UK gigs; more than likely just himself & his acoustic, but he’s well worth catching. Possibly there's be a new album or EP available.

Re: Josh Doyle

As anticipated; Josh’s gig last night in Newcastle was a great mid-week lift for the spirit. Despite a slightly ragged start, Josh getting lost in town on the way to the venue (not the only one….) his set soon got off to a flyer with familiar favourites like Concrete Moon coming in soon, as well as very tasty new tracks from his Modern Times EP. Josh acknowledged his locale for the evening with a quick refrain of Fog On The Tyne and the slightly more dubious Crocodile Shoes (well, who’s the best Newcastle song-writer, Alan Hull or Jimmy Nail?) before it was “request a cover” time - or an excuse for a bit fun in the middle of I Believe I Can Fly. and a revisit to the past life Dum Dums days.

That’s the thing with Josh, he has the canny knack of building up the tension with his songs such as Lighthouse; Bird of Prey but can dispel that intensity with his easy audience rapport between songs, but never looses sight of it. And of the newer material, Keep My Mind & Through The Night show that he can still threaten mainstream success, if he wanted while Locust Years and Strange World maintain his integrity as a powerful song smith.

Another thing I’ve noticed about Josh’s shows are his audience; many artists have their shares of avid fans, but with Josh’s, its more a feel of a large, extended family and the goodwill and fun that generates is fuelled by some great songs like Solarstorms; I Figured The World Out; I Want To Break Your Mended Heart. A 90 minute set just flies over, but leaves you feeling energised.

As per last time, support came from a couple of local artists, missed the 1st guy’s name; did something very interesting with an old Doris Day song, in a modern folk style and then Teesside’s Dressed Like Wolves frontman Rick Dobbing doing a solo spot and leaving vivid mental images with the likes of “Ghost of A Toothbrush”.
