I for one hope this means a return to using Rosewood instead of Baked Maple on their guitars....

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

Gibson needs to find and champion "new tone-woods" and show empirical evidence (via graphs or whatever) that the new woods they are using has similar resonance and tone to that of mahogany-back, maple-capped bodies with rosewood or ebony necks. Baked maple doesn't look that great, I'd be for staining it... or using a different wood.

Price has an effect on perception. Since because of rarity, the stereotypical woods would always be more expensive, so people might think the newly found tone woods would be "as good" because it's cheaper. hmm

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

I wonder what will happen to the ebony and rosewood that has been imported already?  Doesn't look like Gibson will retain it. /:

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

Granadillo boards suck. I count myself as very fortunate to own a pre 2000 Les Paul.
Weight relief is for pansies too...

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

My guess is the Feds are having a bon fire as we speak with all the finger boards they took.  I think Gibson finally realized if they plead guilty life would be a lot easier on their sales and they could buy Rosewood again.  It doesn't say it but why else would the feds drop all criminal charges.

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

no, they are supposedly to send the confiscated woods back to heir country of origin.  then i am sure gibson will have to buy back finished fretboards and so on.  now, i think alternative tone woods are great and i never will understand why gibson never used pau ferro.

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

I guess they got to a point where their business was suffering to such an extent they had to give in on their not guilty plea just to get back to making guitars again, very sad day for justice.

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

Sad day for justice?? Gibson did wrong, and finally admitted as much, how is that a bad thing?

I'm all for alternative woods, but as NPB says, Baked Maple just looks wrong - it's too pale. If they could stain in so that it was darker then great. I have to say, I've tried one of the Midtown Custom guitars with the Richlite fretboard and it looked so much better and felt fine to play as well (can't comment on sound as no way of knowing what a Midtown with Rosewood or Ebony would sound like)...I think if they'd used that on the Custom Classic Les Paul then I'd be buying a black one...but they didn't so I won't be...

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2012/Augu … d-976.html from the department of justice. I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV but it could of been a case of semantics, interpretation of  the law. The value of the confiscated wood in dollars paid seems to be less then earlier portrayed.

It still appears that either an employee was involved that turned them in or the records of the employee made it appear they knowingly violated the law. From all the evidence it would appear that simply having the wood manufacturing process done in Madagascar magically makes the wood eligible for export makes you wonder about who was motivated to report to the DOJ the potential violation.

That is about the least political comment I can make on this subject.

this could be why other guitar companies weren't targeted, they weren't reported.

Gibson could start selling fretless, inlay-less guitars, so Gibson certified luthiers could fret and inlay them after the sale if applicable of course wink

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

I'd move to Canada and skip over all these stupid laws.  Lower taxes too.  If you want a USA guitar get a custom shop and have the standard stuff there.  Just an opinion.  Not trying to outsource jobs but maybe they could move those employees there or offer them a CS job.  Good thing I'm not in charge of Gibson.

Mate, after all this it would not surprise me if Gibson weren't considering this very course of action, if it were my business I would not be impressed by my treatment by the government one little bit.

Dear Mr Gibson, please bring your company to the UK....for no other reason than that way I could get a job helping to build Les Pauls!!

And said Les Pauls would be much cheaper! I echo this sentiment, seriously, you can have all the rosewood you like! I'll even go and get for you myself!

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

Stopped by parents last night (Saturday 8/11) and they had Huckabee on (Fox News).

Huckabee interviewed Gibson Pres. Henery Juszkiewicz about the lawsuit and settlement.  I couldn't find a link to the footage, but I see Huckabee reairs tonight (Sunday 8/12) at 8PM and 11PM (also at 3AM Monday).

The interview appears during the last 15 mins of the show.

(I thought the Gibson head looked a little uncomfortable on the air, not with the topic, but his delivery. Maybe thats just his manner.)

Nope he wasn't acting weird thats just Henery.  I figured Gibson Caved to get back to making good guitars again.  I'm glad their getting the rosewood back.

Re: Gibson lawsuit issue at an end.

i don't think gibson caved; they got caught breaking the law and couldn't prove otherwise. not sure why that's so hard to believe.  and that other companies are using rosewood doesn't mean that gibson didn't do anything wrong.  if i remember correctly, the gov's position was that gibson intentionally mislabeled shipments of rosewood in and effort to cover up what they were doing.  and if i remember correctly, their german source for wood is known to have issues w/ illegal exports.  i simply don't believe gibson was taken advantage of here.  also, these law exist for a reason and they're not stupid.  often times laws like these exists to slow down just how much wood can be sold and exported.  it helps preserve a natural resource and creates work for the people in the country exporting the wood. in that sense, i think the laws are necessary and good even if they make life slightly harder for gibson guitars.
