Topic: vintage SG jr.

Just figured out a deal today to get a 1965 Gibson SG Jr. Been gassing for one bad since I've seen Tyler Bryant a few times and he gets massive (thicker than Graham Whitford's Les Paul and 3 Monkeys) tone between that and his Fender Bassman. Should be in my possession about 2 weeks!

Re: vintage SG jr.

Joe's Stonetree and a 65 JR, starting quite a cool collection!

Re: vintage SG jr.

Congrats... Those are great guitars and a relative bargin these days.. Again relative is the word... Still expensive.  The right P-90 are PAF killers... Its all about the clarity and the output...Have fun with that thing!!

Re: vintage SG jr.

Who needs to be saving for a down payment for a house... lol. I managed to wrangle this one in for under $2k so I'm happy. I did some reading that mid '65 was the time that the neck became thinner, but this one still has a the thick neck. One thing I'm very excited about is the fact that it still has the vibrola on it... Not that I will use it much, but a lot of the ones I find have them removed so it will be cool to have one that is 100% original. Can't wait to rock with this thing. 2 weeks!!

Re: vintage SG jr.

I happen to have one of these.. a 65 SG junior that has original frets and they look almost new.   This one may look a little familiar.  I picked this guy up cheap and put true vintage parts on it to get to original shape.   There is a pretty famous signature on it too!   I'd like to think this is the guitar Joe was referring to in his post above.  Probably not though.   He signed this one many many years ago in Fort Wayne, Indiana after a bar gig.

I am new here and can't figure out how to post the image.   If someone can help I would appreciate it.

Re: vintage SG jr.

I love my gibbys as I do my Fenders.   Each one does something very well.

Re: vintage SG jr.

RJ- Thats AWESOME! Looks exactly like the one that will be here in a week or so. Like it? Do you find that the vintage p-90 is fatter than PAF style pickups?

Re: vintage SG jr.

I love the PAFs in my 335s but in an SG Junior P90 is the bomb,   Its rough as hell.  Mine has the less desirable thinner neck.  It has all original electronics as it has never been resoldered.   65 was a transition year for these.  Nickel/Chrome hardware, full batwing/small pickgaurd, thin/thick neck, Large/small cavity, Sheilded/non shielded cavity and thin/thick nut width.   Mine has mostly 64 parts and few 65 parts.   Gibson did things that way back then.  The POTS are dated 65 and have never been unsoldered.  THe neck is also 65, the rest is 64.

Re: vintage SG jr.

The only thing I know so far about this one is that it's an early '65 with a fat neck. That was about my only requirement haha. Even if it is a little less desireable, that really doesn't bother me... I'm so thrilled for my first vintage Gibson purchase!!

Re: vintage SG jr.

You got the MOST desirable neck if you got the fatty.

Re: vintage SG jr.

NICE!

You're lucky Joe signed it... he usually doesn't sign guitars that are older than him (1977)

Re: vintage SG jr.

He said at the time it might hurt the value if he signed it.   He was hesitant at the time but gladly signed it.  But that was a long time ago.

I am glad to have it.  Its my only Vintage guitar.   I have quite a few historics (2 of Joes BTW) but its my only Vintage.  I am looking forward to seeing Logo33's when he gets it.

I hope he posts up a link to pictures.
