Topic: Have you been to a good movie lately?

The Dark Knight Rises this afternoon.  What a great trilogy Christopher Nolan has created for the Batman franchise.  While Hollywood always strays from the normal mthology and continuity when making comic book movies for the sake of simplicity and casual fans, Nolan clearly understands the history better than any previous director and keeps the nonsense to a minimum.  The fact that he even knows who Talia is makes him a scholar!

Can any Batman movie (or any comic book movie for that matter) top Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight?  Of course not, but Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises were great bookends.

Can't wait for the BluRay box set!

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

I couldn't agree with you more regarding Heath Ledger in that role. Such a sad ending to a truly gifted artist.
I don't usually go to the theater any more as my audio/video system is better, my popcorn and snacks are better plus I can pause and take pee when I want without bothering anyone else. I can also smoke (I know, I know. Bad habit. So sue me!) when I want. The last good movie I saw at the theater though was " Black Swan". Ya gotta love Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis!
Looking forward to the new "Bourne" movie coming out.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

I liked Prometheus, thought it deserved a better reception than it got.

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

That's an Aliens prequel right?

"TED"        "TED"         "TED"
The Animated Teddy Bear with Seth Mcfarland's (Falimy Guy show) voice....

P/s I saw the new Batman....it was alright...I do think the Joker's (Heath Ledger ) was a better villian than this "Bane"-had a hard time hearing his voice through his mask at times......although Ann Hathaway played a very nice Catwoman!

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

I liked Ted too, but my wife is still talking about it 2 weeks later.  She loved it.

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

Put another one in the guilty pleasure column for Ted from me.  Not for the easily offended, but I laughed like crazy.  Went back and saw it a 2nd time, too.

I find that interesting that Vertigo would be considered the all-time number one film.  I'm not sure it's Hitchcock's best.  Citizen Kane has been acknowledged the finest movie for decades and for good reason: The direction, editing and cinematography were decades ahead of its time.  Recently I've decided that my favorite movie is The Best Years of Their Lives.  I never get tired of watching it.  It has a timeless quality and I'm always fascinated by the generation called the greatest that came home from the war and went on with their lives.  PTSD certainly was rife in 1946, but those men and women for the most part handled it privately.  I was born at Walter Reed Hospital and being the son of an Army officer I grew up around those veterans.  The interesting thing I found was the silence of their war experience.
The character I liked the most in the film was Fred Derry, played by Dana Andrews and the scene when he's sitting in a junked B-17 is film-making at its finest.  TBYOOL (I think) won 7 Academy Awards, a record at that time, and oddly Fredric March beat out Andrews for best actor.

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

" Adding to its mystique was the fact that Vertigo was one of five films owned by Hitchcock which was removed from circulation in 1973. When Vertigo was re-released in theaters in October 1983, and then on home video in October 1984, it achieved an impressive commercial success and laudatory reviews."

Vertigo is by far my favorite Hitchcock movie...probably my favorite 1960 movie. And it has NOTHING, NOTHING I tell you, to do with Kim Novak.

Re: Have you been to a good movie lately?

The Dark Knight Rises was truly epic. If you're a comics fan, it's kind of a mix of No Man's Land and The Dark Knight Returns. It had to be extremely difficult to do anything that would be as remotely good as Heath Ledger's Joker, and I thought Tom Hardy was as wonderful in a completely different way. Can you imagine how hard it would be to act with just your eyes and your voice? That's basically what Tom Hardy had to do. Bane had a dark sense of humor, was extremely intelligent and calculating, and was every bit Batman's equal in regards to physicality. I truly loved that this movie comes back around to Batman Begins. It was a great way to tie up the series. Also, I loved Bruce Wayne's character arc over this movie, and I think that Christian Bale delivered his best take on Bruce of the entire series. Michael Caine's performance was truly heartbreaking, and Anne Hathaway freakin' OWNED as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. And Joseph Gordon Levitt gave a wonderful performance as John Blake. And then there's Gary Oldman giving his usual sturdy work as Gordon. Chris Nolan is one of my favorite directors going right now, and I loved that he put an end to the dreaded "3rd movie curse" (Spiderman 3, X-Men 3). I am truly sad to see his take on the Dark Knight end. But at the same time, I'm truly glad for what he gave us. If this guy doesn't win a Best Director Oscar sometime soon, it's a crying shame.

Yeah, saw  the Batman film-was a bit disappointed in the soundtrack mix?Seemed to my 50yr old ears that the explosions were LOUD and the talking-or murmuring-bits were too low down for me to pick up,thus,.....SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!.....i didn't click it was morphine Bane was addicted to,that the 'autopilot' got fixed, and couldn't figure why Alfred cried like a baby at Bruce's graveside, the next was tipping a nod to him in an Italian cafe! I know i should go see it again and pick up the bits i missed,(prob'ly got these bits wrong!),but ,overall,'liked it'. LOVED the first two,tho.......big Batfan, got toys n stuff, love the character.
