Topic: HOOK THEORY: 1,300 popular songs analyzed for chord patterns

Interesting article on why some chord progressions may work better than others.

Also check out the "Song Analysis" tab as well.

I suspect that this subject is likely to be more at home in the Gear section. wink

I bought the iBook for the iPad based on that site... it's interactive and talks a lot about melody... SO COOL. Well worth $15 for the iBook.

The interactive part of the ibook uses song clips that are easily recognizable while showing you the I  IV V and other things... I love it so far.

Hi Nic,
My name is Chris - I'm one of the three people that created Hooktheory.  I stumbled onto this thread because we have Google Alerts send us an email whenever anyone on the web mentions Hooktheory.  It is so great to hear that you are enjoying the iPad book!   I want to take the opportunity to personally thank you for supporting us, and for saying such great things about the book.  If you ever have any questions about the book or website, feel free to get in touch.  Cheers and thanks again.  - Chris

Gotta love Google alerts. That's how I found the 1965 Gibson I now own cool

I work at a university in the Detroit area, and I've fwd'd your site to some music professors in the dept., and they thought it looked great as well.

Breaking it down the way you're doing it is good instructional design. I know because I'm an instructional designer. wink

cheers

This forum follows Joe Bonamassa. It's a really great and friendly atmosphere around here. Since I've praised your handi-work, I can at least urge you to check out some things by JB. He chimes in quite a bit as well. If you don't know him, I can fill you in...

Blues-rocker 30-something in age. Started as a white boy from upstate NY, trained young in classical guitar style. Started playing blues still as a child. Opened for/toured with BB King at age of 12. Guitar lessons by guitar great Danny Gatton. First album was produced by rock and roll hall of famer Tom Dowd. JB makes about an album a year since 2003 and sells out large theaters and performing art centers US and worldwide. Ignored by Rolling Stone Magazine and Grammy nominations, he has consistently had #1 Billboard blues charts albums since 2004... selling more than the likes of  heavy hitters such as Eric Clapton and the millions of Stevie Ray Vaughan "greatest hits" that keep coming out. Gibson guitar has three instances of signature Joe Bonamassa Les Paul guitars including a Custom Shop (read expensive), Studio, and Epiphone (economy priced) versions. Proud owner of two 1959 Les Paul sunburst guitars... the reputed "holy grail" of guitars... and plays them on tour. His song 'The Ballad of John Henry' was listed in the top 10 riffs of the decade. Just recently played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction for Freddie King.

That about covers it. smile If you like rock or blues-rock... he's definitely one of the "good guys" to support.

Hey Nic,
I just watched the "Midnight Blues" video on the homepage.  So awesome.  Some of JB's riffs remind me of Slash back in the GNR days - not too many people pull off blues with that much edge.  I really like it.  Also, thanks so much for forwarding Hooktheory to some of your colleagues.  We're actually getting a remarkable amount of interest from people at the university level so we're excited to see where it goes.  Also, if you have time, it would be so awesome if you could post a review for the book in the app store to let others know what you thought.  Here is a link to the app store page: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/hookthe … mpt=uo%3D4 Cheers - Chris

Hey, how about a shout out for the original poster…just kidding, I'm glad Nic has a new task on his plate.

As Nic mentioned the material is presented in a easy to understand format.  My ear's are shot so any leg up I can get makes life easier.  Plus I do believe there are certain "formulas" that when followed can produce wonderful music and when not followed you get jazz.

Chris take the time to progress through Joe's catalog from the beginning to end and what you'll hear will thrill you.  You will not only hear Joe become a better guitar player but his growth as a songwriter is impressive and his talent as a singer will inspire you.  Take the time to view the Royal Albert Hall performance on youtube…it's a real toe-tapper.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
