Topic: Buddy Guy

Just picked up two tickets second row center for Buddy Guy and Johnny Lang.  I've never seen Buddy Guy before so I'm looking forward to this one.

I saw that...its such a busy summer musically already I just couldnt justify another date.  I havent seen Jonny Lang playing his own music since before he lost the "Kid", opening for George Thorogood in a small outdoor thing at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.  He did make the Experience Hendrix show I saw, and to me he didnt quite cut it.

I remember when Jonny used to play all his gigs barefoot.  Saw him many moons ago at the Aragon "brawlroom" (inside reference, eh, Gary--if you're listening?) in Chicago.  Buddy Guy and Susan Tedeschi, too.  Hard to beat that line up, at the time.

And Buddy Guy is spectacular, live.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

I saw that gig but a swelling DIL's due date had the boss put the kibosh to any gig plans for a bit. Last time we saw Jonny, he sucked. Last time we saw Buddy, he  was sick but did his best. Gotta be better now! Pulling for ya.

Love, love, love Buddy Guy - haven't seen him live in about a decade, but he's great.  I've been listening to a lot of his 90s stuff lately (Slippin' In, Live: The Real Deal w/ the SNL Band, etc).

Saw Johnny Lang on the Hendrix tour - he was pretty good.  Played a couple tunes w/ Brad Whitford, but Brad's guitar was half a step out of tune for half of one of the songs (a tech ran out and gave him a new guitar).  To their credit, they just kept going and it was a great set overall.

Saw Buddy Guy at the same show Rick mentioned above.  He was ill.  He tried, but it was a very very short show.  Kinda disapointing.  Saw Johnny Lang last August at the Anaheim HOB.  We walked out after about 7 songs.  very strange live set

I see this tour is coming to Dallas.  I think I'll pass

Yeah, I was a little disappointed in not getting tix, then I saw Jonny Lang on Audience last night, and didn't like it at all.

Seeing the reference to Buddy being sick for that show reminded me that Jonny Lang had no voice, for that Aragon show of long ago.  Made for an interesting set, since Jonny was playing guitar feverishly (literally), while bandmates tackled the lyrics.

Lots of young growlers find they don't have the training (or the laps around life's racetrack) to keep that up.  I thought the same of Jonny, when his early stuff was out.  And "heaven forfend", even Joe B. back in the earliest days.

Muscles from the gut up to the lips are involved in being even a decent vocalist.  And when I see someone that can sing like it's coming from their toes up to the top of their head (including the inner reaches there), all while playing an instrument and rolling through a set with everyone involved, I bow to the effort that requires.  One of the reasons all live shows impress me more than the average studio set.

EDIT:  To add that Buddy merits special attention, in every regard.  And regarding the head to shoes reference, none better than Buddy (with guest John Mayer) to tell it:

Just wanted to say I am enjoying Buddy's latest album "Rhythm and Blues". I was reading his autobiography this week and I've had a smile all the time. He is a great story teller, and the album is very enjoyable.
