It's a steaming pile of revisionist hipster garbage and I am astounded that the magazine actually had the nerve to publish it.

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

And I thought the Rolling Stone list was bad...

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

Worst list I've ever seen...  What a waste of time.  You're telling me that Jimi, Stevie, BB, Clapton, Page, etc. etc., don't even make the list?!?!

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

The introduction to the list was downright offensive.

I stopped reading that article when I got to:  "We see the mewling histrionics of Jeff Beck as tyranny instead of catharsis. The name Derek Trucks is practically alien to us."

*rolls eyes*

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

I think magazines like Spin and Rolling Stone do these list to create a storm which sells copies.    I realized that when Lou Reed ended up on one of those list.  Its more fun to read the comments about them.   Thats were the real entertainment is.

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

Follow Up:  Ok, I gritted my teeth and went through the list.  Never heard of most of these guitarists.  In fact, I only counted 21 names there that I recognised.

I'm going to take the article in the spirit that (I think) it was intended - which was to provide exposure for a lot of non mainstream guitarists to the world.  Nice to see quite a few female guitarists on the list.  I am going to re-read the bio's when I get some time, and hopefully out of this I might be introduced to half a dozen or so new guitar talents that I was otherwise ignorant of...

Wow, that's an appalling list if I've ever seen one!!

Skrillex doesn't even play guitar but made the list.... what a joke!!

Exactly that I think. Even now on practically every guitar forum you've got hordes of people complaining about Skrillex. Their site must have got a ton of traffic in the past few days.

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

I read this in the same breath as the Rolling Stone one.

With the RS mag, my friend had it up, and allowed me to guess the top three. I got two out of the top 3. How predictable. hmm
At least Guitar Player magazine lets the fans vote.

LET ME SAY that that I think there is a HUGE difference between being a "songwriter" and a "guitar player" and sometimes those lines get confused on these lists. Bob Dylan? I don't think he is a great guitar player, but he IS one of the greatest songwriters whether I like him or not... just because he writes his legendary songs on a guitar doesn't make him a greatest guitar player... just as if he wrote them on a piano doesn't make him one of the greatest pianists....

5 minutes of my life wasted....

Re: Spin Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists

guys, - this clearly is not about your/our taste in music it is about something completely different

the SPIN staff decided to find some wheedle in a haystack, taking on the impossible task of ranking our favorite guitar players of all time.

It is subjective, - and thank goodness music is so varied, that is what makes it so interesting . Who can say what genre of music and therefore what guitarist is better? - the list is tosh, it is designed as a talking piece, and to get "outraged from Surbiton" to get his knickers in a knot and then post a link to it on his favourite website because that will help promote it to an even wider audience as it will be pushed up the rank of Google searches when somebody is looking for "guitarist" or the like. ..

As a very good band (ducks for cover) once said "Don't believe the hype".

How subjective is it if #100 doesn't even play guitar and Hendrix isn't even on the list? That's like saying Luciano Povarotti should be on the list of greatest race car drivers because he's Italian and so are Ferraris.
