Topic: Indy 5/5/12

Last night was our sixth show and we were looking forward to a great show.  We had row B seats and also attended the meet and greet.  Joe was in a great mood during the M&G as usual and even joked about sharing the venue with a local senior prom.  During the concert, we felt that Joe and the band were having a great time and giving their usual best!  The addition of Tea For One was an added treat.  The problem for us last night was that the mix sounded way off at times.  The show started out rough but that sometimes happens until things get dialed in.  There were moments where Joes vocals were completely buried in the mix, as well as his guitar at times.  And then for Just Got Paid, it sounded like the sound tech lost his mind and shoved the mains all of the way up.  This was the first time that I couldn't wait for the song to be over.  My ears are still ringing today.  This isn't just something that happened last night.  We attended a Christian concert featuring Casting Crowns a month or so ago and the same thing occured at that show.  I have never understood why the sound techs feel the need to distort the sound so much by boosting the levels to that point.  I don't mind it loud, as long as the mix is kept clean and tight.  In the case of Joe's show I thought it was maybe because we sat so close, but I checked with friends who were in row M and they felt the same.  There will always be differing opinions on shows and I'm not picking on Joe, just wondering why the mix can be so bad at times.  Is it the venue or just an off night for the guys at the board or where you set.  We have sat within the first 5-7rows at two previous Joe shows and the sound was spot on through all songs.  We love Joe and the guys, have all of the CD's most of the DVDs and will continue to support him and yes will attend more shows.  Was just a little disappointed last night.  I did get some great pictures and will share them soon.

Hi thaze!  I was at the Murat/Indy show too, but much farther back than you.  Row FF, Orch. L.  Yea, it was loud, but I always expect loud. I was sitting next to a guy from Ft. Wayne, and we'd both seen Joe at the Embassy there, and we agreed that the sound was not as good as other theatres we've seen Joe in.  Oh well, at least we didn't have to listen to the Prom's music! smile

Great musicians have a language & vocabulary that transcends the usual barriers & touches us on a more primitive , basic & yet complex level....

It was pretty loud.  For the most part I thought the mix was pretty good.  But there were definitely some anomalies at various points.  I don't know what the heck happened during Just Got Paid.  Guitar sound and volume always all over the place.  I could tell if Joe was doing the switching or if it was the tech.  Something was definitely amiss on that song.

THe SPL (Sound Pressure Level) was way too high at my seats too!(Row M, middle stage) We could not hear Joe's vocals over the music and the mix was terrible. I read the same same complaint from the Reno show and talked with a friend that attended that show with the same results.

Joe doesn't hear this in his stage monitors, it's the Mixer's job at the back of the room. I went to the back of the room near the the mixer and it was better, but not by much and I still couldn't hear Joe's vocals very well when the band was in full tilt.

I hope they get this fixed.  It was still a great show!

I'm glad to know it just wasn't me.  Donna, I agree, the show at the Embassy was spot on the entire show.  We attended one in Greenville, SC the November before and it was excellent also, and we set in row F at the Embassy and row G at the Greenville show.  Of the 6 shows we have attended, the one at the Murat is at the bottom I'm afraid to say.  In previous shows I had always seen one of the sound techs take a laptop near the stage and I think one other time saw them in the balcony, I assume taking readings or maybe adjusting via blue tooth?  I didn't see that at this show.  Anyway, it was a mess and yes, hopefully whoever was in control, they have a better night tonight in Evansville.

Also, hey Murat!  Since when is a well brand drink worth $10!!!!

There were times during the Des Moines show where I thought it was a little too loud, and that the bass and drums were drowning out Joe's guitar.

Of course loud is based on perspective.  Saw Joe in Indy on Sat and the Rammstein in Detroit on Sun.  Rammstein was so loud (as they should be) that you could feel the sound pressure waves on your face.  I wore good earplugs and my ears were still ringing a bit after the show!

This was my 2nd show and I sat 2nd row pit towards the left.  I am a HUGE JB fan but have to agree the mix on Just Got Paid was distorted and a bit loud.  The Detroit show (also sat 2nd row) was much better.  I hope they get it fixed by the Providence show where I'm taking a college friend and attending the meet & greet.

The difference between good and great is humility.  How refreshing to see a premier musician like Joe be humble, self deprecating and grateful for his success.  I look forward to all his future recordings.
