Topic: New Amps On Tour

Why the change in the amps this tour?  Noticed the Catagory5 and the Twinkleland were missingand replaced with a Trainwreck and another I couldnt quite make out.

Also saw Joe playing a Lester with P-90s.

Kinda cool to see that the evoloution continues.

So if you have the latest talk on the street regarding these items, inquiring minds want to know.

Dude, if you had access to that many cool amps, wouldn't you swap them around occaissionally?

Re: New Amps On Tour

P90s were used in Les Pauls until humbuckers made their appearance in 1957. They are still made, and can be found in all sorts of guitars made today.

Re: New Amps On Tour

I dig the fact that he is always changing things up and how his sound continues to evolve.  I dont think he changes amps and guitars in the interest of making us buy more stuff.  Manufacturers give him equipment in hopes of him using it to get us to buy it but I think he truly uses the equipment he likes and that he feels improve his tone.

Still a pretty cool job to have.  Wouldnt that suck to have people just throwing all this high end gear at you.  A problem I wouldnt mind if only for a short time.

I was hard to tell from my vantage point if the Goldtop with P-90's was a 50's original or a newer reissue.  Seemed pretty clean if it was an original.

Re: New Amps On Tour

Joe played the Trainwreck at the SLC show. What a great sound with his '59 LP. It appears to be an original Wreck. I wonder if is a Liverpool, Rocket or Express? I wonder what her name is?

Re: New Amps On Tour

I believe Joe is currently playing a Trainwreck Liverpool and a Jim Kelly amp.

Was at the show last night and delivered a new Category 5 68-100 with a white faceplate(ordered for this tour).  It promptly went into the rig for the night.  The trainwreck is a liverpool, and the Jim Kelly is a 4 6v6 amp that Joe is giving a "field test".

Rest assured, whatever he puts up there he will sound great through it.

THe 57 -90 lp sounded fantastic

Re: New Amps On Tour

Yes, there is no doubt Joe will sound good with whatever he plays! I'm guessing the Van Weelden will be back in the line-up sooner than later.
The amp that has me scratching my head is the Carol Ann. I have JB 100 #9 and the amp just kills. I've got an el34 model and just love it. It's clean and clear when you need it to be yet you can make it snarl and get mean simply by how you attack the strings. With that said, I swap amps around a lot myself and can only imagine the enjoyment and inspiration it must bring Joe to try different amps and tones from time to time to keep things fresh.

Re: New Amps On Tour

Yeah the Cat 5 and Van Weelden are in play but behind the rig for ascetic reasons at the moment..  Both Peter and Don are really close friends and know that things come and go out the front but stay on in the back..  I am using 5 amps this tour..  2555, Trainwreck( thank you Charlie Daughtry) Cat 5 100 Jb,  thank you Don!!  Jim Kelley prototype which is awesome! VW twinkland ....  Its a hootenanny....!!

Is there a big difference in tone between the el34 and 6l6 tubes?  Been shopping CA for a while, but never get ot play one in person.

Thanks for the clarification Joe. Appreciate the info straight from the horses mouth. I didn't seem to notice a change in the sound from the rig earlier in the tour. Don't suppose you'd be willing to share some of the tonal differences you were going for with the two new heads?

Re: New Amps On Tour

The CA amps are unbelievable. I'm playing an OD3 with 6L6. I like both kinds of tubes for different reasons. The 6L6 tends to have a tighter low end. I think of more prominent miss with EL34s.

Re: New Amps On Tour

Your welcome Joe!!

Happy to be part of the team in what ever role we play.  Really enjoyed the hang in OKC.  When time is your most valuable asset, it was an honor to get as much as you set aside for me.  Really enjoyed playing your 60 335 through that Tweed Harvard-what a find!  thx again, see you in Dallas!!!
