Topic: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

Hey all-

Working on putting my rig together... I just got two fender blues jr's that I'm going to have modded to have a speaker out so each amp can have an extension cab. I know I want the cannabis Rex in the amps, but I'm thinking about getting another speaker to blend with it. I play pretty dirty American style rock and roll/blues (think Tyler Bryant and Philip Sayce). Or maybe it would be best to just use 4 cannabis Rex speakers. What are your thoughts on this? I was thinking maybe the lil Texas or Texas heat. Or perhaps the governor. I've heard that the c Rex is really bass heavy and I'd like to fill the sound out.

Thanks!
Logan

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

I myself would go for something in the Celestion vintage 30

This is the Blues Jr with the Canibis Rex, Personally I dislike mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nya1G2LD26A

Personally I liked the speaker in my Blues Jr better then the Canibis Rex.  I modded my amp and it was way better after that.  I can thank Nick for the link http://billmaudio.com/wp/

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

I have a fender blues jr modded with around $185 worth of Billmmods

I had the Eminence Swamp Thang (American) in there and it sounded great. For giggles, I swapped it for an Eminence Governor (British).... this is their direct competitor to the Celestion V30.

I like the Gov'r over the V30 because it's not as shrill. I'm keeping hte Gov. in my Blues jr. But I also highly recommend the Bill M mods if you're ok with a soldering iron. Make the amp sound like a boutique $1000+ amp! cool

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

Hey guys,
thanks!

I just picked up first of two blues jr's I got this week off eBay. This thing is pretty sweet, but I can see where the Billm mods are going to help it out. I emailed eminence today and they recommended either the Wizard or the Private Jack. I really want the C. Rex because of the nice lows, and they said that either of these will help bring out more mids/highs (but not shrill) to make a nice full sound. One of the mods I want is the external speaker jack so I can essentially have a 4x12 rig and a little mini amp wall smile. The wizard is supposed to be an edgier speaker great for classic rock. I'm gonna try that one first.

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

The basic mods kit will bring out the bass and its only $50.  This will completely change the amp.  I suggest changing out the transformer as well because with all the add power to the bass your really going to be starving for more power.  The transformer will bump you up to 18 watts, but its well worth it.  I also went with the brightness mod, a metal jack, and a 3 way switch so I could have standby.  Different tubes won't hurt either.  I think I reget selling my old speaker after doing all these mods it was insane how good it sounded.  I really dislike my Canibis Rex, some day I hope to put something like the Vintage 30 or the Gov' in, but for now I'm stuck.  Maybe this speaker would be good in a cabinet along with something else but alone I really hate this speaker.

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

When I go to a 2x12 or 4x12 on my blues jr, i just unplug the main speaker (1 speaker jack)

The Bill M mods really bring out the bass, my bass dial doesn't go much higher than 6 now or it would be too much. He also has a "free"mids mod where you basically jump two of the tabs on the mids pot. without doing this, you'll have mids even when it's on zero, so the mod fixes that design flaw. One thing about the bill m mods is that a new speaker will be ok but the guts upgrade is so drastic, it makes that stock speaker sound better to the point where you might not want to spend money on a speaker.

Here is a site that reviews speakers for the Blues Jr. specifically:
http://billmaudio.com/wp/?page_id=295

and what that page says about the CRex:

Eminence Cannabis Rex
The Cannabis Rex gets its name from its hemp cone. Hemp fibers strengthen the cone and impart a different flavor than typical paper cones. The cones are made for Eminence by Tone Tubby, the leader in hemp-cone speakers. This is the warm/clean jazz speaker! It’s a great clean speaker, but its cleans have that hemp cone personality–soft-edged, but not mushy.  It handles overdrive and distortion very well when you push it. It’s very efficient, one of the loudest speakers you can put in an amp, and it pushes out pretty, round bass notes really well. The top end is very sweet, even forgiving. This speaker couldn’t make a harsh note if it tried and is beautifully balanced bottom to top. Super for creamy lead work.

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

A wrench has been thrown into things. I got two blues jr's... one is a cream board and one is a green board. The cream is bright and snappy, and the green is dark and needs to be desperately modded as it is very farty. But overall, I like the way the dark and the bright mixes... tips?

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

Basic mods and a transformer will cure the farts.

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

Thats about $100 worth of mods.  Do this before replacing the speaker.  The speaker isn't whats farting, its that voltage starved Transformer.  Bare minimum do the basic mods $27 for a green board.

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

The Bill M mods have distinct mods for the cream board and the green board. If I were you, I'd change the speaker last, as modding the guts will do way more for your sound.

I have a green board Blues Jr

Re: Cannabis Rex speaker blending

Absolutely will do. I may end up just running texas heats in the 1x12 extension cabs since there is such a difference between the two amps already. They blend nicely and dont really need anymore bass or treble in either amp.
