Topic: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

There have been many promising young bands that give me hope for the music I love and Alabama Shakes is certainly one of them.  Their new album Boys and Girls just popped out today and it is in a word phenomenal.  Listening to singer Brittnay Howard conjures up the usual suspects, but the air this time is as fresh as an evening rainstorm.  A lot of women have been compared to Janis, but this one doesn't mimic.  "You Ain't Alone" is an incredble song and I can envision Mick Jagger crying his eyes out wishing he still had this fire.
Videos aren't easy to find yet, but I found this article with songs you can listen to.

You might want to Kenny, I know I would.  Here's the official video for "Hold On".  Only thing I can say is lightin' in a bottle....

Thanks for the link Curby - superb!! I'm in Vegas that day so its impossible.

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

Thank you Curby! Just listened to their whole album online and I absolutely loved it. Funny you should mention envisioning Mick Jagger wishing he still had this fire, as Alabama Shakes definitely has a bit of that trademark Rolling Stones loose-tight vibe that's bluesy, organic and honestly presented. Very cool!

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

Saw them on CONAN about a month ago and they played "Hold ON" which I loved and have been looking forward to the new album ever since.  Sounds like its time to search it out.

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

Damn Curby! You nailed another one! I'll be hunting up their music tomorrow. Thanks again!

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

On first listen, songs could be stronger to match the astounding vocals.................

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

I absolutely LOVE Alabama Shakes!
I have everyone at my office digging them!
Before the lineup was announced I was really hoping they might have played the N.O. Jazz Fest this year!
Maybe next? smile would be nice!

Peace!

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

Bought the new disc yesterday at BB (7.99). I sure hope it grows on me because after first listen I'm not overly impressed. The best song is the single "Hold On" I was hoping for more gems, but I did only give it 1 spin.

Might be another great live band that doesn't translate well to studio?

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

For anyone interested in the UK they are on Jools Holland's Later Live on Tuesday 24th April at 22.00 ( usually just one song only) and then on the full recorded show on Friday 27th April at 23.05 (for maybe 2 or 3 songs).

Jack White,Norah Jones and the Chieftans as well so should be a good one! When are they going to give Joe some time on this show!!!!

Thanks for the tip Randu, just gave the vid a listen and the singers drawl reminded me of the Kings Of Leon.

Re: Alabama Shakes: Blue Me Away!

I somewhat agree that the album is bit polished versus some of the live videos I've seen.  The fact remains though that this is a band that's worthy of the hype.  Brittany Howard is a special vocalist and it'll be interesting to see her future development.

Southern Soul?  Hate that.  It's loose but no slop.  It's tight but not clinical,  Curby!  Thanks.
