Topic: Sheffield show review

Just in at 2 am. Superb show, glad to see the goldtop back but thrilled to hear the title track off the new album. Excellent. After the show, got my pick guard signed he stated he would be putting a couple of tracks into the next couple of shows, so if you are going you are in for a treat. Joe in great form  as were all the band. A large crowd, not the best venue but awesome just the same. Joe still charming as ever. Going to bed now happy as Larry.
Oh for all those set list people, it was Bird on a Wire(my tag) that he dropped to be replaced by the new title track.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Sheffield show review

Small world. Me also just back over the Pennines.
Wow, some awful fog to drive through!!

Funny remark from Joe about going back the next day to hear the rest of the show. I guess he was referring to the reverberation in the hangar of a venue (ice hockey stadium use as well).
Some very entertaining and amusing exchanges between Joe and Tal involving a snatch of......no I won't spoil it for those going next week in case he does it again.

The new title song sounded like a gem !!

Re: Sheffield show review

Agree about the venue, more suited to larger crowds and standing section (the Irons were here last year and pretty much filled the place!)

It was also my first time seated at a JB show and to be honest I never really get on with sitting at a gig, feel like I should be bused back to a home for geriatric rockers sad
(I'm 49 and spent the other week rocking with the best of them at rock city in Nottingham with Rival Sons and Black Stone Cherry!!!)

Back to the gig - Joe and band were awesome, kicking off with Slow Train and then a stream of classic Joe tracks including, in no particular order - sorry poor memory, blame it on my age wink  Midnight Blues (sensational), Sloe Gin, India/Mountain Time (my personal favourite), Steal your Heart Away, Dust Bowl, TBOJH, Song of Yesterday which we didn't expect but was very welcome, a beautiful acoustic set, Django/Just Got Paid and the new title song is a corker!

Sorry for the one's I forgot, I'm sure someone will help fill the gaps! Nice to see no support group and as usual Joe did a long set without an interval (2hours 20mins).
Thanks Joe and despite having to sit, you never let us down, looking forward next to the meet n greet in Nottingham!

Re: Sheffield show review

Thanks for the great reviews. Good to hear that he is putting some of the new tracks into the set too. How big an arena is it?

Re: Sheffield show review

I forgot to mention last night, for all you Fender people, Joe used the Telecaster during the set. So those that said you wouldn't see the Fenders again, t wasn't just Las Vegas when he used them. I did think it funny when Joe guaranteed us all that he had never had a hit song, the new album will definitely not have a hit song and he swore that as long as he played he would never have a hit song. This got an ovation from all present.
As we were all behind a large fence after the show, with security guard to say it had never happened there that any artist mixed with the fans it was great to see Joe get off the bus and come over to us the gates unlocked and to talk and sign items of loyal fans waiting. What a great gesture, especially when they needed to get away to Newcastle with the fog getting worse all the time. A truly amazing genuine guy. Definitely a hit to us all.....

The security man at the gate said it seated 15 thousand and last night half the arena was used , probably no more than 5k were present. Only a guess from what he said mind. The roof just needed lowering by about 30 feet...

Re: Sheffield show review

Another great show from Joe last night, although only my third favourite gig of the year after Black Stone Cherry and Steve Hackett, but I digress.

Is Joe incapable of putting on a bad show? He certainly should appear as Professional in the picture dictionary. I thought the introduction of Tal (Bill Bailey/Wagbo lookalike) gave a great new dynamic to the show with his interractions with Joe, and if only Joe could get Carmine to run round like the Black Stone Cherry boys it would have been gig of the year!

As a 48 year old I don't mind sitting down for gigs, especially after standing for Black Stone Cherry last week. Glad I had a fifth row centre ticket too, just right smile

Here's a nicely fuzzy clip of the New Song

Re: Sheffield show review

Thanks for the set list Michael/Julie, great to get the details from the sound engineer, don't know how anyone else would remember the whole list and in order unless they wrote it down as each track started playing!
Not surprised to hear Joe spent time with the fans, that's what he does.
One other side note, great to see the venue organisers allowing the 'guide dogs for the blind' hold a collection inside the venue!
A great gesture on their part and I hope they raised a load of cash for a worthy charity - well done Sheffield Arena smile

Re: Sheffield show review

Just to add, on the set list stated, prior to mountain time he made a short medley of India and Django as the lead in to it. Both done slightly differently, using violining on Gjango to some effect.
Idolbone, did you get your new tottoo design. If so post a picture of the finished article when it's done..

Re: Sheffield show review

Thanks for the reply Smithy (I hope you don't mind me calling you that). Joe really is starting to fill the big arenas then, well deserved I think.

Amusing comments about not having a hit during the Sheffield show. After the show on Friday my brother was talking about this - here is this guy in concert who doesn't have a hit, doesn't even have a song where he can do the usual 'everybody together on the chorus' type stuff! (Even John Henry isn't exactly a singalong, although it has one of the best riffs ever). And yet by the sheer power of the band's performance, he has the audience eating out his hands. Long may it continue.

Also, how great is it that Joe interacts with his fans like this? What a guy!

Hi Pete, it was lovely to meet you last night after the gig. I would just like to second what you say about Joe's great gesture in getting off the bus to come over and meet us. This is what makes it so special; he's a really genuine and down-to-earth guy who always makes time for his loyal fans. As for the gig itself, well, just amazing!!  smile Absolutely loved the new song. Roll on Birmingham! Have a great time in the US!
