Suspect that rig clocks in at just a shade over $300

Get a used Fender Blues Jr., Peavey Classic 30, or Vox AC15 (tube)

all have "good" blues sounds...

good luck!

Don't listen to this guy. Do you really think Muddy Waters, Howlin wolf, The 3 Kings had boutique gear and $4000.00 guitars when they recorded the classics? Any idea what the Beano album was recorded with? Two Rocks and Dumbles are the furthest thing from the blues there is. $5000.00 Les Pauls don't really scream "Blues" to me either. SRV's #1 was some piece of crap that nobody else wanted, same with his #2, along with his crap Fender twin, beat up Marshall and Tube Screamer. Not exactly cork sniffing material.

I think your little Peavey is just fine. Some of the masters got by with less. Work on what your fingers do and the rest will follow. If you must, take NPB's advice and get yourself any of the Amps he mentioned. Two Rocks and Dumbles for the blues, LOL. What blues? The Grounded Yacht Blues? My Benz gots a Flat Blues?

Re: best amp and guitar for blues sound

HAHA thats the best thing I've read all day!

I've got a blues jr and honestly for under a grand its the best fender tube amp you can get.  Only one that might give it a run is the Pro Jr, and its got less eq and a smaller speaker which won't help you while playing out at a club.  I think Spider was just trying to say if your wanting the best amp to get Joes sound you got to get amps like Joe's.  This is a good idea if your Joe Bonamassa however I don't play in venues that let you crank 100 watt heads wide open.  So the Blues Jr and a mic are my thing.  Also DarthElvis is right most of the masters only used one amp and at the time it was more then likely either a Fender brand or a Sears and Robuck Silvertone amp of sorts (Why do you think Jack White sounds so good?  He uses Silvertone amps from the 50's and drove the price up on them because it sounded so good)

Look guys come on here all the time trying to ask whats the best amp or pedal or guitar to get Joe's sound and the bottom line is Joe is what makes Joe's sound.  The man plays about 8 hours out of the day.  He's clocked more hours on a guitar then most guitar players who have played all their life twice his age.  Your Peavey is fine, Lynyrd Skynyrd still uses them.  Don't let the guys with all the money to spend on gear get you down.  I myself am a proud keeper of the bang for the buck, and if I ever buy a guitar over $1000 again it better be because I'm going out on tour making a lot more then I am now.

Re: best amp and guitar for blues sound

Just don't expect to get a good clean tone from it, and you'll have to mic it live.

Re: best amp and guitar for blues sound

+1 to a Blues Jr. I got one for 275....If you're going for just a basic blues tone, everyone is right it's all in the hands. Get that vibrato and those bends down and it won't matter what your rig is.

It will work, and you will be happy with it. Be ready to mic it if you're in a band or gig situation.

Also, you should get a delay pedal to set slightly "wet" and an overdrive pedal for solos. I like a little delay as opposed to reverb pedals.

Then you should be able to get some good blues tones. Blues rock even. Or even Joe Bonamassa tones.

Here's a vid of JB playing through a wall of Marshall Class 5 amps... although I think only a couple of them were turned on.

I played through a Class 5 and liked it a lot. But I own a Fender Blues JR and like the cleans better on the Blues JR. My brother loves his marshall class 5... it's a great little amp with some balls.

Wait! - I can answer this one...

The Beano album was recorded with a handwired amp (probably 5F6-A circuit) running western european made valves.

In fact I can't think of a classic blues album of the kind you are refering to recorded with a circuit board amp imported from the far east.

But yes that Fender or the Marshall class 5 are worth a look.

Re: best amp and guitar for blues sound

harlequingr

The Class 5 is AMAZING!  It's quite good for a live setting I believe, but yes, it will need mic'd.

It doesn't clean up very well, but if you use the volume knobs on the guitar it will be fine.  Set the volume on the amp up all the way and control the volume with the guitar knobs or a good volume pedal.  Add a tubescreamer with it as well!

Love mine!!

Beano was a JTM45
