Topic: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

OK, maybe some are embarassed to admit it. wink I was a Monkees fan years ago, I think I even had a Monkees metal lunchbox. Can't believe Davy Jones died of a massive heart attack today.

Its funny, this past Saturday night I went to hear a friend who plays in a bar band and they just added a 3 piece horn section.  Lots of dancing going on and they did a Monkees cover.  We were all giggling on the dance floor about our Monkee memories. (Davy was such a cutie with a great accent)  I thought Smash Mouth did an excellent version of I'm A Believer for the Shrek movie years ago.  I always thought the Monkees wrote it but Neil Diamond wrote it.

A must watch for a saturday night as a youngster. Liked the music but have always been less pop more rock even as a kid. Still sad though. They were in the UK last year and were such a laugh when interviewed. A sad day.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

I was a big fan Angela and started to post this earlier but got sidetracked. There are a lot of memories of them, the show which was fairly lame, but loved most of the music. Whatever summer that was, I'm a Believer was the hottest song on top 40. Sometimes they would play it 2 times an hour where I was living in Arkansas. My fav was Last Train to Clarksville, great guitar I thought by Mikey. I also loved Davy's English accent, so charming in a mix with those other 3 gooberheads. Yeah, and all the girls went bonkers over him. You know what, it sounds like a Neil Diamond song. RIP Davy.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

Just read the news as I turned on my laptop. Quite a shock after just watching his episode on Bio Channel recently, and only 66, waaaaayyyyy too young. Tres, don't know if you were kiddin' around, but Neil Diamond wrote I'm A Believer. I was a Monkees fan when they hit the TV airwaves, even had a double breasted denim shirt like they wore. It was Jr. High days, all the girls were in love with either Davey or Mickey and all us guys wanted to be like them, an instant trend. I was soooo jealous of 3 of my buddies who got to go see them live @ the Cow Palace in SF, they were taken aback by the opening act though, a guy named Jimi Hendrix.

Yeah sure! I loved that programme. Such good fun.

It was great to see a young English guy doing so well there in that time.

I loved the songs too. The whole Monkees thing was about fun and good times. He'll be remembered. Distinctive voice and I never tire of hearing their music when it comes on the radio....

Loved the Monkeys show and the music!  My sister had all the albums and then one day she was having some kind of spell and threw them in the garbage! It didn't take long for the rest of the sisters to figure out what a huge mistake that was. First song to come to mind as a fave - "Valerie."  RIP Davey.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

They were my pre-teen crush after the Beatles.  Haven't listened to them for years, but back in the day they were every's girl fantasy.  Too young.  I hate this getting older crap somedays.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

I wasn't a "fan" per say, but they were definately part of the soundtrack to my youth. I was saddened more than I would have expected when I heard the news today. Perhaps because it brings my own mortality into sharper focus.
RIP Davy.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Jimi had just taken England by storm and the suits apparently didn't care who they paired him with, just trying to catch that lightning in a bottle stateside. Monterey Pop put him over the top here.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

I'm at work today and my daughter calls me this morning and asks if I had read any news today. No, just working my **** off. She tells me that Davy Jones has passed away. NOOOOO. I am so sad to hear this news. He still had many more years to live his life. Another piece of my childhood chipped away by death.
About 30 minutes later the hubby calls me to ask if I had heard the news. Yes. They both knew I have a soft spot for the Monkees as they were my first musical idol crush as a kid. Before Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple there was Hermans Hermits and the Monkees.
My first purchase of a 45 was a Monkee song. A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You. Still one of my favorite Monkee songs. That 45 was long lost in the not so nice childhood that I had back in the mid to late 60's. But an island of happiness for me was looking forward to Wednesday nights (I think) and watching whatever Monkee antics were in store for my viewing. I had a huge crush on Davey, Mickey, Mike and Peter. Many a time was daydreaming about any one of those young men sweeping this young girl off her feet with song and a smile.

Davy, may you RIP. I hope you had a happy and fulfilled life. Thank you for the memories.

Not embarrassed at all.....Count me in for The Monkees!! I use to tear pics of Davy Jones out of TigerBeat and tape them on my bedroom walls. He was my fav!  I always loved him singing, "I Wanna Be Free"  I still watch the reruns sometimes on the weekends.    I don't have a lunchbox Angela, but I do have Monkee trading cards.  I knew I should have went and seen him at the Iowa State Fair last summer  sad   God Bless Davy!

Sad to hear this news. The Monkees, the first manufactured pop band, although originally put together for a TV show. Yes, I was a fan.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

Sad news.  I used to love watching the Monkees on TV, and although I was a bit young at the time to have a proper crush I always thought Davy was the cutest.

Re: Was anyone a Monkees fan years ago??

I too had a Monkees lunch box Angela, and as Jdawg said 66 is way to young to pass

RIP Davy
