Topic: Elfstedentocht

In case some of you are unaware, the Dutch are skating crazy. The moment we get a proper cold snap, the moment we have one night around -10c, people start talking about the Holy Grail of skating, the Elfstedentocht.  tongue

The Elfstedentocht (or, in West Frisian, Alvestêdetocht, English translation: "Eleven Cities Tour"), at 200 km, is the world's largest and longest speed skating competition and leisure skating tour, and is held in the province of Friesland, Netherlands only when the ice along the entire course is 15 cm thick.[1]

The cold spell in late Janaury and early February 2012 has heightened the expectation of a 2012 Elfstedentocht. On 2 February 2012, it was reported that there was a 95% probabilty that the event would take place and that various locks that controlled the water flow in the canals had been adjusted to maximise the ice thickness. On the same day, the Dutch weather meteorological service forecast that temperatures would not rise above freezing until Wednesday 8 February at the earliest and that the ice would be 15 cm thick from Tuesday 7 February until Saturday 11 February.[3]

So, it looks like we may actually be in business this year!  I have lived here since 1989 and have only ever seen one Elfstedentocht, in 1997.

Since the Elfstedentocht is such a rare event, its declaration creates excitement all over the country. As soon as a few days pass with sub-zero temperatures, the media start speculating about the chances for an Elfstedentocht. The longer the freezing temperatures stay, the more intense this "Elfstedenkoorts" (eleven-city tour fever) gets - culminating in a national near-frenzy when the magic words "It giet oan" ("it is on!" in Frisian) are spoken to announce that the tour is actually taking place. The day before the race many Dutch flock to Leeuwarden to enjoy the party atmosphere that surrounds the event. The evening before the race called the "Nacht van Leeuwarden" (Night of Leeuwarden) becomes a giant city-wide street party (Frisians, who have a reputation of surliness, are said to thaw when it freezes). At the day of the race most Frisians and Dutchmen either stay home to watch the race on television or find a place along the route to cheer on the skaters.

Meanwhile, the city of Amsterdam has closed the sluices that flush the city's canals at night, and declared the smaller canals of West-Amsterdam (where I live) closed to all traffic so that the ice will quickly reach a safe thickness to permit skating on the canals. I've only ever done that twice in my time here and would dearly love to do it again!

I'll post updates if this actually goes ahead! tongue

Re: Elfstedentocht

I've heard of it. Have a good skate George. My wife tells me memories of flooding the low places in city parks to make ice skating areas in Minnesota where long sub freezing spells are common.

edit. I just read up and it is a rare event! Only 15 times in the last century has "long ice" been present. I found a blog by an Austrian who skated the 200 km race the last time. It is pretty cool and gives the result of an average skater vs. the pros. http://www.violinist.com/blog/jenohubay/20072/6469/

Re: Elfstedentocht

Sounds like a good excuse for a party! smile

We are losing ice rapidly here as it's been a rather mild winter so far. I was out ice fishing last weekend as the ice was 4 inches (10 cm) thick on a lake nearby. I would not trust it after a few 40F + days.

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: Elfstedentocht

That sounds so cool(no pun intended)I used to skate-play hockey on the lake by my house. It was usually good for a majority of the winter. We were lucky one guy always kept a rink by watering the surface overnight.I think to see races through the canals would be so much fun!

Re: Elfstedentocht

I played a lot of pick-up hockey in my teens and spent hours skating. I owned hockey skates and speed skates.
I hadn't been on skates for 20 years, but our company holiday party was at a restaurant in Chicago's Millenium Park, right next to the ice rink there. About half the people participated in a pre-party skate.
I went out for about. Half hour the week before to get a little ice time in beforehand. VERY shaky to start, but it came back a bit. At our party, I got very comfortable after the first 10 minutes and was actually voted as best skater. Not bad for 55 and by far the oldest guy on the ice.
I'm not ready for 200 km yet, lol. It sounds like fun and something I would have loved to do about 30 years ago.

Re: Elfstedentocht

The decision whether or not the race can be held this weekend will be taken tomorrow around 9 pm CET.

Even though the overall condition of the ice has been described as 'not good', a number of areas have reported ice of 12-13 cm, while others report only 6-8 cm. The minimum required thickness is 15 cm in order to guarantee the safety of around 20k skaters.

There are still five more nights of decent frost to come, and the army has helped sweep the course clear of snow, since snow prevents good ice 'growth'. The last time this was held, in 1997, they estimated that 2m watched along the course, while a peak of over 9m watched on tv - out of a total population of 15m!

Some people who know much more about these things than I do are quietly confident. wink

I remember a number of friends in my neighborhood in Lakewood, Ohio turning on the garden hose on a below freezing night in their backyard and instant rink in the morning and broom hockey all day.

Re: Elfstedentocht

Well we are gearing up here for a Alster ice festival here!

The inner lake the Alster in the middle of Hamburg hasn't properly frozen over for some years. Certainly not enough to allow the festival/Fayre that used to happen.

However, this coming weekend it is anticipated. They are checking it daily and it could be a go. It is minus 10 outside my window today and we have had that and lower for the past week or so.

I was on a frozen lake at the weekend, but if it is possible on the Alster then that will be quite a party. Here's hoping it' thick enough (the ice that is). 2 more centimetres according to this article.

Just heard that the "Alstereisvergnügen" will take place.
About one million people expected!
It's a bit too far away to make a trip to Hamburg.
Wish you lots of fun at the weekend.
