Topic: Just hangin' around...

Here's one of the stranger things I've ever seen in my yard...

Recently, we've had a rather large Red-tailed Hawk present in the neighborhood. I've seen it perched on roofs, trees and Goldie and I have seen it on walks. Two days ago, Goldie and I came out of my garage via the main powered door and the Hawk swooped by. I assume we must have surprised it while it was sitting in my Ash tree next to the driveway. I watched it fly away and thought nothing more about it.

Yesterday, while doing some winter gardening in this great weather, I noticed something hanging in my Ash tree and what I found was this (there are 3 pictures):

I can't believe that it took two days for me to notice this little guy hanging in the tree, but it is possible that the Hawk dropped it when we startled him on Tuesday. There are smaller Hawks that visit our home that are similar to Sharp-shinned Hawks, but they mostly go after small House Finches and not something the size of a squirrel. I did remove the Squirrel from the tree and whatever got him had pretty much ripped his throat out. I buried the little guy in my backyard. I guess it's all part of Nature's process of selection.

Speaking of dogs and cats, a co-worker who grew up in rural Minnesota reported a big tree with an old eagle's nest blew down on the family farm. Inspection of the nest found quite a few dog collars mixed in the debris...

Interesting story Roy; i'm all for nature taking it's course.
I have to say first, i'm not keen on the Gray Squirrel, a family once tried to set up home,  up in the loft space, it took ages to get them out, and yes, a few had to die for them to get the message.
I regard them as, 'rats with furry tails'

Re: Just hangin' around...

I used to have several cats. And of course dogs too. People just love dumping unwanted pets off in the country. Anyway...

One, a all black cat we had was a real tough little bugger. He'd come home frequently with cuts or punctures. I stitched him up more times than I can remember. He would proudly bring home pieces of critters he had pounced on to show off. The other cats stayed around the barn or the house. But not this guy. He was a hunter. But, one day he never came home. I searched the fields and along the creek banks but I never did find him. I figured it was likely that a hawk finally got him.

I can understand that Brack, but I do put out some critter food for the these little guys as I've pretty much squirrel proofed my bird feeders. Actually, at our previous home which was located in the woods, I had a baby squirrel walk up to me without fear, he obviously had fallen out of a nest. So I took him to the humane society in a pail and the lady there lifted him right out with her bare hands. I was surprised and asked her if she ever worries about rabies and she said gray squirrels are not known carriers of the disease.

Last year a female squirrel built a nest in my Purple Martin house which normally just houses common Sparrows. Well, she had it stuffed so full with grass and leaves that the compartment covers had burst open. I lowered the bird house as it's high on a pole and then got on a short ladder to clean it out for the spring birds. I reached in and out tumbled 4 baby squirrels with some hair on them but eyes still closed. I caught them pretty much on my chest and then they rolled to the ground. They were moaning like little children...boy did I feel bad. Mom had jumped into a nearby tree when I first started lowering the house however, she never made a sound at the scene of me going into her home. I quickly put the babies back in the house, put what old grass and leaves had fallen out back and raised the house back up. She obviously came back and raised the young ones. Several weeks later I went to clean it out again and everyone was gone. For a while I would see smaller scale squirrels in my yard and one for sure stayed. Many times he'd be in the yard eating and wouldn't run when I was out grilling. I'm hoping the one that was hanging in the tree wasn't my little buddy. wink

Re: Just hangin' around...

We have the same issues here in the foothills, but not only do we have hawks, we also have the occasional eagle as well as coyotes. We had gone thru a few barn cats and attributed their disappearance to the coyotes, but I think they're more likely snatched up by some of the larger raptors. We also have rattlesnakes, but I don't think they're the culprits. It's the circle of life right in front of us.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Just hangin' around...

Squirrels don't last long enough around here for hawks to get them. I have a Jack Russel that dispatches them when they are careless enough to touch the ground. Opossums and rabbits too. 13 pounds of Tasmanian like devilry with a no quit attitude and patience to wait them out.

My sister in law lives a bit more out in the country and a Red Tails Hawk and large Owls routinely take kittens, and puppies. You can't leave them outside and expect them to make it to adult hood. That's nature.

Re: Just hangin' around...

I was back in the UK on the South coast over NY and the gray sqirrels were all over the place in the town parks and so on. No visible fear of man whatsoever.

Funny to see them in a way as living here in Germany the gray is unknown and we can delight in the wild red variant.

I use the red squirrel image as a logo for my business and a couple of them are regular visitors to the terrace area when there are not too many customers about.

They are quite the entertainers during the courting/mating season. Racing around the stems of the trees. They add real colour to our forest and show our visitors what tree climbing is really about!

fried up in bacon drippings with some country style gravy! That's what some southerners here still do, and I hear it's pretty good but have never eaten one of the little fellers. I'll put it on the bucket list.

Re: Just hangin' around...

Bogie told me a story about coyotes killing all the neighborhood cats in southern Cal. as we encroached further & further.  My brother corroborated the tale with one of his own.  Went on for a few years, then suddenly the coyote population grew noticeably less bold.  Everyone wondered why.

Late one evening it became very obvious just about sundown.  Mountain lions!  Mama cougar was feeding some kittens... Funny old world.

A Texan I know of (a rancher) keeps Irish wolfhounds.  He saw mine and the conversation started.  When he told me why I was stunned.  He keeps 2 breeding pair.  (big old babies) but they get real restless at night about every 3 months, so he turns 'em loose.

Evidently they're the only dog in the world that can run down a coyote, catch it and break it with one shake of its head.  He said it's like something out of a movie.  The wife and daughter won't go out when he follows them in the Jeep.

They don't wanna see their "babies" act like that.  lol
