Looks cool, wonder why he went with black?  Or was that to be "the" BCC guitar?

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

That's the BCC guitar.

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

Incredible guitars no matter what color they are and even better after Kim works his magic.

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

I decided to do it black to go along with the BCC theme...  The black Steve Morse ect ect..  Its a great guitar with real PAFs in it.  The headstock was broken by British Airways but expertly repaired...

It always makes me cringe to see a guitar dismembered like that.  Certainly the results speak for themselves, but I cringe nonetheless.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

are all those pictures of the same guitar? why would they take the top off and how??

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

The top wasn't removed, just the plastic/nitro lacquer finish that Gibson sprays these days. The top gets stripped and carved to a more vintage-correct dish before re-paint.

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

Wow..so that's #52 that had the broken headstock ???  Very nice work indeed...Wow again!!!

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

So when a job is done like this, i.e. the neck is removed, and considering the neck was broken (and then repaired), would it make sense to just replace the neck w/ a new one?   Or is that repaired neck good as new?

Is a "vintage correct" carve more rounded and pronounced?  Or is the top reduced, making it a bit flatter with less rise and a more gradual slope? -S

I don't know about the "good as new" issue, but I suspect many players would be leery of just swapping in a new neck altogether. Given the significant variances one can find even in instruments produced right next to each other in a production sequence, the chance that the new neck wouldn't "feel" as good to the player is non-trivial. Unless the player herself/himself is around to help with the choosing, just grabbing the appropriate neck out of a supply of them would be something of a risk...

If you go to their site they do reshape the neck for this process.  So who's to say they wouldn't have been as well off replacing the neck.  My guess though is that Joe would want to keep that where it was, a finish is only paint, the wood is wood from one of his "babies"

Re: The remake of Joe's 052 bonaburst

A good top carve gives the LP a nice rounded "belly" with a dish at the perimeter. One of the inspirations for the original designs was the top of a violin..sort of the anti-Fender (slab).
