Topic: Joe have you tried the Carol Ann OD3?

Hi Joe
I am fortunate to have many high end amp heads and combo's to compare to make this statement. I got to tell yeah Alan's  Carol Ann OD3 is amazing. I can plug direct into the OD3 and obtain amazing tone without one pedal. From clean then hit od then have a tone that reminds me of a Tube Screamer but better. It is so quite also. I never thought I could sound so good. Well done Alan...well done.
Joe you really need to take this for a ride. I can only imagine what you can do with this head in your rig.
Happy new Year
Ron from Pelham N.H.

Dave - you should be able to get yourself a Lazy J easier than most of us?  About the same price point as the Carol Anns, aren't they??

If I am not mistaken I think Alan mentioned to me that he has a distributor in the UK now. Alan lives up the road a couple of miles from me. Check Carol Ann website

Re: Joe have you tried the Carol Ann OD3?

Happy new year!  Curious Ron, did you look at/consider the Triptik?  The main difference seems to be the 6L6 vs. EL34.  Both look like exceptional amps! Looking forward to a clip or two.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim
I have not tried the Triptik at the time I just purchased the OD2 from Alan and liked it so much I jumped on the OD3. I also have the Tucana 2 another killer Amp. Do you have the Triptik? How do you like it? All I know is you can't go wrong with Carol Ann Amps Alan does outstanding work and is a really great guy.
Cheers Ron

Actually, they are worlds apart. Totally different designs, in fact the Triptik is an totally original approach to a rock amp. It uses the same philosophthy that Ken Fisher did with his Trainwrecks. It squeeezes every bit possible out of less gain stages. Though the design is totally different from the TW. It's a 3 channel rock amp. Different tones and more gain on tap than an OD3. Different low end response (much tighter). Has two OD modes on either OD channel so each can be set to classic or mdern voicing.
Gain levels available are pretty high (more than an SLO) , but it's not super compressed, it is not scooped and it has a very sweet mid-range voice as well as a very low noise level. A killer clean channel thats not an afterthought finishes it off.

THe OD3 tonally is very similar to the OD2 but with 2 gain channels and an extra lead master. Tonally this is closer to the JB-100.

Hi Ron, I don't have the triptik (or any of the CAs...yet smile ).  I had been following the CA threads on TGP a while ago, I remember Alan talking about a forthcoming 3 channel amp, but kind of lost track of what he was up to, until I saw your post.  Checked out the website, and saw the OD3 and triptik and was curious how they compared.   I faced amp analysis-paralysis a couple of years ago and ended up just getting an axe-fx.  Interestingly I end up usually playing the trainwreck and od2 "amps".  After seeing the OD3 and triptik, the GAS has started up again for a REAL amp.

Do you know of any online clips of the OD3/ODr3? If the OD3 voicing is similar to the OD2, I'd probably be most interested in the ODr3.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the reply and information!  I know you're a busy guy!  I've checked out the triptik clips.  Are any OD3/OD3r clips forthcoming (besides Ron's wink )?

My influences include obviously Joe, Zep, Rush, general classic rock to some AIC, RATM.  It sounds like the OD3r could meet my needs.

Thanks,
Jim

p.s. Ron, I don't want to hijack your thread so just let me know and I'll take this over to TGP. big_smile

Glad you like the Axe OD2 model. I worked with Cliff (owner of Fractal) on that one. I wouldn't let him release it until it was right for me. THe final tweaks I made to I actually used an OD2 power amp to perfect the preamp model alongside an actual OD2. I've used the TW model on a couple of recordings. Sounds a ways off a TW, but it does record well.

Yeah, I have 2 'go to' hand tweaked presets on my Axe-FX, and one of them is based on the OD2r model.  I've always said if I was to get another amp, CA would be top of my list based on the fact that I love the modelled tone so much!

Do you have the Axe-fx, Axe-fx ultra or the Axe-fx II?

Re: Joe have you tried the Carol Ann OD3?

Price wise...I'd be able to get a Lazy J combo and the Axe-Fx and cover all bases...

Not affordable for me...for at least another ten years.

An Ax-FX is about $2000 in USA not sure how much a Lazy J cost but I think the cost would be less. How much is a Carol Ann and a Ax-fx across the pond? Are you saying a Ax-FX and a Lazy J cost less then an Ax-FX and a Carol Ann OD3?
