Topic: Clapton Mod

Just ordered the Fender Clapton Mid Boost Kit. Any comments on what to excpect or how they sound?

Re: Clapton Mod

I had a clapton strat.  The biggest problem I had was if you had an amp with a ton of distortion you couldn't use the mid boost.  It fed back too much.  I heard that Ty Tabor From King's X put that same circuit in a foot pedal and after it was out of the guitar it was fine.  Basically what your doing is robbing the treble for increased bass and mids.  If your not carefull you'll end up muddy.  The TBX switch will help with that.  The issue I have with the TBX is it doesn't give you the traditional strat tones.  If you have the tone set to 5 it will sound like a tone control on 10 for a normal strat.  If you set it past that it adds treble and removes bass, the same if you turn down it adds bass and removes treble up to 10dB.  My guess is the circuit is too muddy and they added a TBX to clean it up.  I always ran mine at 10 but I didn't know how to use it until after I sold it.  The mid boost is really nice if you have a tube amp thats slightly distorted from being turned up too loud.  You turn on the mid boost and there you go your playing a fat juicey strat.  I never used the whole 25 dB  I always found that if I left it around 2 to 6 I could use my volume control for the rest.  Its a nice circuit you will like it.

Re: Clapton Mod

That's why I sold my Gilmour pickup set. The two active tone controls made it very hard to get the ideal sound out of. You were always having to sacrifice something. Good luck with it though.

Thanks. I have a good tube amp and I have it at the point of breakup which i think will sound awesome with the mid boost. The kit is nice for me because when I record, I use a Strat for rhythm and a Les Paul or SG for lead. So now I can get close to those tones live.
