Topic: joes string gauge???

Hi iv been turned on to ernie balls for a while now and they are really cool , joes uses 11-52 but you cant buy them you can only get 11-54??

Re: joes string gauge???

Many music stores sell individual strings. I'd do that.

Re: joes string gauge???

Ernie balls in the purple pack are 11-48. (Power Slinky 11, 14, 18, 28, 38, 48)

I've used the GHS boomers before: 10-52, (boomers are nice but a little bright) and the 52 seemed awful heavy in general.  Even top wrapped and even on a 24 fret PRS & regular LP.

Do what NPB suggested and buy a pack of 11's to 46/48 or something and then maybe get an individual 52 gauge to try on the low E.  May have to get another set of a different brand that comes with a 52 on the low side too.  Maybe you'll like it but I think it feels like I have a bass string on my guitar.

Re: joes string gauge???

To be honest, I'm happy with the 48 low E... only guitar I would consider the .52 is for Dropping down do D or C... or for the song Stacked Actors by FooFighters- Dropped down to A! Now that is a thud!  cool

Re: joes string gauge???

I use 10-60 in standard tuning, but 10-52 works too. Some of that thickness on the sound does come from beefier strings than average, but I like to be able to bend notes more easily, so I stick with 10s. You can get used to anything, so don't sweat it too much, and if 11-52 rocks your boat, by all means, use that, but don't use it because someone else does, use it because it gets you the tone and comfort you need.

Re: joes string gauge???

Exactly. The Rev Gibbons gets his tone out of 8's !

Re: joes string gauge???

I have wondered, never seen it being posted though. Is Joe using a lower gauge for fenders?
I know he's recording with fenders again but did wonder, given the higher tension with the scale length and lack of ability to lower it with top wrapping, is a lower gauge being used?

Re: joes string gauge???

Thank you for good communication.

Re: joes string gauge???

I asked Joe what gauge on Skinner and I believe he said 11-52

"Joe B saved my soul, forever grateful Ron"
"Some people dream of worthy accomplishments while others stay awake and do them"

Re: joes string gauge???

I was using the same gauge as Joe on my LP for a while, what I did was buy a pack of these

http://www.ernieball.com/products/elect … ckel-wound

and then I would just swap the high e for an 11 and the g for an 18 and boom, bonamassa set

according to the video .. Billy Gibbons uses a processor to make all the guitars sound like his #1 LP..
so it doesn't matter what strings, pickup or guitar Billy uses.. they all sound the same at the same loudness.

that's I guess why I like Joe..
sound processing comes from his hands

btw.. this is one of those Zombie threads that was mucked with by that now banned user
