Topic: Having Wah Troubles--Again...

For around 5 years or so now, I've owned a Snarling Dogs Blues Bawls wah pedal.  It's always been a sweet sounding wah that I've liked, but unfortunately, it's been fairly unreliable.  I've put money into fixing it in the past for different reasons, but for a while it's been fine--until now.  It's a rather interesting problem actually... As it's true bypass, I get my guitar sound through my amp when I'm plugged into the wah but it's not engaged.  But, when I turn the wah on, it completely cuts my sound.  Nothing, just silence.  Essentially, it has gone from being a wah pedal to a killswitch...

I must admit, I'm not a very savvy guy when it comes to taking apart pedals and figuring out what the problem is, let alone knowing how to fix it.  So, do any of you perhaps have a clue as to what my problem might be?  And if so, it is worth it to pursue repair?

Re: Having Wah Troubles--Again...

My best guess would be (considering you've already checked the obvious things like is it plugged in right, battery) something has either come loose inside the circuit or something has gone bad which isn't always an expensive fix.  If you could open the back of the wah pedal and look for obvious damage to the circuit board such as burn marks or a capacitor that might have exploded inside there that would be the easiest thing to look for, even broken or loose wires.  If you've had it 5 years and this is the second time you've had an issue with it given todays electronics are only supposed to last a few years, I'd say your doig alright.  If your not comfy checking it out let a tech do it, I'm betting less then $50 parts and labor vs $100 to $200 for a new wah.

Re: Having Wah Troubles--Again...

Are you using a powered pedal board? I've had a couple instances where the power cable going to my wah wasn't all the way in and it did the exact same thing.  Just suggesting to check the easy things first.

See, that's an interesting thing--I recently got my Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 (which I absolutely love, by the way...) and it was having issues with the plug, like it was really touchy.  At first I was using a right-angle cord and the fit wasn't snug, so if the cable wasn't in the right spot and all the way in, it wouldn't work.  After switching to a straight cable, it worked fine for a little bit, but then stopped.  I assumed it was the cable again, but when I checked, the cable was in as far as it could go and messing around with it did nothing.  That's when I thought it might be a different issue.

I'm going to put a battery in it to test if the cable input is the problem (in which case, I'll feel kind of dumb for not checking previously...  roll ).  But if that doesn't work, then I'll take your advice, AD3THREE, and open it up to look for obvious damage.  Thanks for the replies.

Re: Having Wah Troubles--Again...

My nice VOX wah has been doing something similar... like engaging the wah cuts the signal. New battery doesn't change anything. The Morley Wah I have is just fine. hmm
