Should've asked for See Me Through. Nice video and just found out on Facebook that Ronnie Smith did some shows back east with Matt. Kevin Hayes shared Ronnie's post thanking Matt & Johnny for letting him join in. Known Ronnie for a few years since he toured with Tommy Castro and now with Volker Strifler. Real nice guy and good drummer! I guess Ronnie was filling time since Volker has been on a short West Coast swing playing with Robben Ford & his brothers.

Yeah, he should have, lol, "See Me Through" is awesome. We saw him play that back last September. Matt does seem to have a variety of drummers that sit in. Each time we've seen him it's been a different person. I guess it depends on who's available at that particular time. I know Jordan John was just playing with him in Canada which makes sense since he is from there.

Re: Matt Schofield

Matt is a great guy! I got to speak to him after a show and got a pick, and at another show he signed my strap!

Stockton ARC - 15/11/14

Must be a running theme on this tour, not only was Ben Poole flying without keys, but unusually, Matt Schofiled was down to key-less trio with regular foil Johnny Henderson not present (currently on “paternity leave” and congrats to all).

If Matt was phased by this rare absence, it didn’t show in the set, once again with the backline Jamie & Carl really tightening it up yet still having than smooth, loose feel as Matt cherry picked his favourite track from each album in the back catalogue, including the live albums, all the way to Siftin’ Throu the Ashes and one of my faves, Live Wire from the more reent Heads, Tails…

As you’d expect, each solo was the work of a craftsman and went down like a 20y old Malt.

2nd biggest surprise, after the lack of JH, the ARC attendance was only about 50%, maybe 150 or so. Shame, because those who didn’t turn out missed an evening of hot blues guitar of the highest order.

Re: Matt Schofield

Had the great pleasure of seeing Matt Schofield (again) in Bristol last night. A truly great performance by a fantastic guitarist and band. I really can't understand why he is not more well known. Great also that he took the time to have a chat after the show. I mentioned that we had seen him in Exeter about a year ago in front of a rather small audience. He smiled and said "welcome to my world". He is one of the nicest people you could wish to meet.

If you haven't seen him, or even if you have, then I recommend that you take the opportunity if he is playing anywhere near you. He seems to be taking time off in December but will be back performing in the USA in January.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the evening was the "one night only" appearance on this tour of Jonny Henderson. (I think he lives near Bristol).

Re: Matt Schofield

Matt Schofield headlined Saturday's show at the Western Maryland Blues Festival. Fantastic set. He flew in his keyboardist Jonny Henderson from the UK just for this festival. You could tell Matt was having a great time. His playing was off the hook and at the end of the show he had Mike Zito and Paul Pfau join him on stage for two songs "Black Cat Bone" and "Evil". So cool to watch these three play together. I filmed the whole set. A little tricky at times trying to avoid certain festival photographers who always want to stand right in front blocking everyone's view. Major pet peeve of mine when it comes to attending festivals.

Re: Matt Schofield

I have seen Matt quite a few times in recent years and I never tire of seeing him. I think his tone is the tone that I strive for but it is somehow out of reach!

Matt is also a great guy and very approachable. In the UK he tends to play smaller venues and is usually to be found in the bar before and after the show talking to fans. Earlier this year I had the pleasure of attending one of his masterclasses in Bristol.

He has done a "Blues Guitar Masterclass" DVD which is both informative and entertaining and well worth buying if you want to see how it's done!

Matt's playing and tone are highly inspiring. I have my reasons why I bought my Two Rock and Free The Tone SOV-2 ;-))))

Re: Matt Schofield

Hey ohiodawg13...just saw where Matt is going to headline the Delta Blues Festival in Antioch, right next door to you....you gonna be there?? I'm going to try to at least catch the last couple bands...

Re: Matt Schofield

Saw Matt last night at this really cool venue only 25 minutes from home. It's called the Snail Pie Lounge and it's actually a barn on some guy's property and he gets some pretty good acts there. It only holds about 70 people, pretty dim lighting, great sound. It's real intimate with comfy chairs in tight rows right up to the stage. Matt played a hell of a show. It was the last of 6 on this east coast run with both Jonny Henderson and Aaron Glueckauf. They won't be with him on his west coast shows. When we talked with him afterwards you could tell he was pleased with the nights performance and said he felt the band was finally really jelling. Aaron has not played with Jonny very much and since this was the last one, he felt they were finally really finding their groove together. You could tell he wished they could be together longer, but Jonny needs to get back to his wife and baby.
The standout of the night was probably "Where Do I Have To Stand". Matt's solo on this one was out of this world. It felt like he transported us to a whole different plane of existence. He did a phenomenal "Hindsight" nearly 20 minutes long with great solos also by Aaron and Jonny. And he also did a Funk Meters tune "People Say", which we had never heard him do before. All in all a superb show.

Matt's shows are pretty scarce in the UK this year (only 1 London date in November so far), so appreciate the review, and the clips.

I've got 2 shots to catch Matt this weekend here in NorCal. Saturday at the Delta Blues Festival in Antioch and Sunday at Harlow's in Sacramento. Gonna try for at least one.

Thanks for the insight, I assume Kevin Hays will probably be playing drums on the west coast swing. It's a treat to catch Matt out here as he plays with very talented and experienced musicians. Besides Kevin, who was with Robert Cray for about 20 yrs., Dewayne Pate likes to sit in on bass which adds a whole new dimension to Matt's sound. Can't wait!

There is no doubt that I will be in Antioch Saturday for Matt's performance at the Delta Blues Festival....I can take a chair and have a nice relaxed day....Harlow's doesn't have any seating so I really don't want to stand for several hours with my old worn out ankles and feet....

I feel your pain, my back and feet don't last that long any more either. I need what's left for work. If I go to Antioch I can ride Amtrak to and from Martinez and walk a block to the plaza.
