Topic: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

Ok

So I have had a 2 amp JB inspired rig for my cover band for some time and like the
flexability of it ,Marshall 2553 jubilee and Ceriatone HRM 50W , So my mate has a marshall
class 5 . I have already had a go in his house and felt it had potential but never used it in
a band situation Until tonite  cool  and , Man it really sounds great cranked  big_smile  just pure
Plexi like sounds at reasonable level I was really impressed , either on its own or paired with
my Jubilee it sounded great . ok downside was no headroom for a good clean but I could live
with that. Honestly a great little amp I could gig with it but would probably have to mic it for
bigger venue but small Pub it would be ideal .

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

I saw one of these in a music store the other day and it looks killer.  Did you use any modulation effects out front when you had it cranked?

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

No it was completely dry, thing is by itself theres lots of overtones and you can fell the valves
doing there thing but add bass and druns and you only hear the good stuff  if that makes sense

Got my Class 5 head a few weeks ago and loving it ever since. I often wet/dry it with my Hot Rod Deluxe and it does a great job.

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

I have the head and combo versions.  I use the head as part of my smaller dual amp rig along with a Tweaker, and for the heck of it, ONLY used the Class 5 head through it's own 2x12 and it held it own over the rest of the band.  Yes, it was miced, but stage volume was plenty.  I only used it that way for a couple songs just to see how it handled.  It's got some balls!

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

I use a class 5 and a hotrod deluxe as well.  I put my delay on the class 5 and use the reverb on the hotrod.  The 5 really fills things out nicely and the two complement each very well.  Have fun with the 5, they are great.

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

Everyone,

What is the general perception on the Marshall Class 5 overall?  MY other guitarist is thinking about downsizing to using just a Bugera 5 watt tube amp and I was thinking if he was serious, I'd get a Class 5 and we'd both just mic the amps.

Thoughts anyone????

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

I think the Marshall will blow the Bugera away with the difference in speaker size, but if you mic and he uses the line out or a mic as well you should be able to be plenty loud.  Forget this if you need clean headroom though.  Clean head room is a stretch with a 15 watt amp.

Leo fender was always trying to make amps sound cleaner and back in the 50's speakers only were rated at 25 watts so he went up on the power making 100 watt twins and things to get a super clean tone.  But of course somebody had the idea that I need to crank this amp as high as it can go to get my tone.  Speaker breakup sounds like distortion.  Plus tube distortion = that classic marshall concept of a cranked amp rocks.  Thats why master volume amps don't sound as good as a cranked non master amp unless of course you crank it as well.

If I didint have my big rig then I would consider this myself  (Truth is I kinda like
lugging my amps and speakers, and setting it up plus it looks cool when set up)
the only thing the Class 5 lacks is a clean sound it , cleans up to a degree but
it may not be enough for you ! but on the up side you get power amp saturation
at a usable level , Honestly  we played (Dont laugh ) Smoke on the water and it
was damn close to Blackmores sound , without any pedals whatsoever .

Im with you.  I like to have a cool looking stage set up and I don't mind lugging amps around.  It's worth it to me cause it does sound better too.  That Bugera V5 is really only a toy, the speaker is too small for anything serious.  I'd go with a class5 combo any day over that, or better yet- 2 of them!

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

Just to clarify...I am not going to buy or use the Bugera.  If we decide to go down that small amp road, I would be willing to but I'd buy a Class 5.  Has anyone out there have any issues with the Class 5?

I also thought about running two amps at the same time.  Getting the Class 5 and letting that play dirty but also running my AC15 on as clean as I can.  What do you guys think of that?

I'd go that route.  That will be plenty of volume too if you're concerned about that.  I used to play with one amp dirty and another real clean.  When they combine you get a very full, round tone.  The clean mixed in behind really adds some body.  I also found when I did this, it sounded better using a delay over BOTH amps simultaneously.  Reverb didn't seem to matter if it was only going into one amp.  Just incase you plan on using any effects. -S

Re: Marshall Class 5 Rocks !!

Sorry SOFTMC its just funny. As far as the Class5 I can't say enough that you will have NO cleans. When you try it out in the store the volume is so low that it fools you into thinking that maybe there could be some. Having said that let me also say that I love this amp. I also have a Dr Z Mini Z 5watt that that I play (no head room there either).
Clean head room is over rated " for those about to rock".
