On the promo I included it looked like the Prez and First Lady were digging "Catfish Blues".
Gary Clark Jr is pretty good from what I've heard on my free Spotify app. Supposedly, he was playing on Letterman the other day.
Joe mentioned The Black Keys, and I must say you will continue to like them so long as you don't listen to the radio. They are being played as much as Creed and Nickelback were in the early 2000's. If you don't want to get sick of the Black Keys, avoid the radio at all costs.
All I've heard from him is brilliant. I don't have the new album, but I have the old 9 song EP he released before 2010, which includes a good portion of songs on the new album, like Bright Lights, Please Come Home, and several others (Don't Owe You A Thang is also on there). Dude is freakin' amazing.
Good to see you settlin' back in the swang an' groove of things, Deezer! Like you , I caught him at the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010, gawking onstage and quick glances at the watch, not wanting to leave either (to see Joe again, tha's a strooonnng pull to make me almost forget about Joe-and yes, his DVD stuff made up for splitting, thank you Lord!) Looking forward to yesterday's release of Blak and Blu. You know, I lose a Luther Allison, I pick up a Bernard Allison, Joe Bonamassa, and Guy Clark, Jr., etc., etc.,.......life goes on and the bit of calling anyone a savior is really silly...the blues never dies, it just gets belittled in varying degrees of ignorance from time to time...In my opinion, Blues Music ranks VERY strong worldwide presently, but whatever, I am just grateful for all the permeation and permutations going on in blues...a great time for them!!! And, he kids are diggin' the blues again!
It's (all) fantastic to me!

Been reading more reviews of Blak and Blu giving it more listens and I've come to the conclusion that this is a very ambitious effort and very, very good. It's a heavy tag to lay "savior" to a young man, but Gary is the closest thing to Jimi Hendrix I've ever heard. He even has the swagger that you'd expect from a rock star. Anybody that can play like he does and aspire to sing like Marvin Gaye or Otis Redding is indeed savior material.
Critics have come down on the continuity of the playlist with its variety of styles, but if the ears are receptive you'll note he can about do it all - old-time rock and roll, country blues, urban blues, riff driven blues rock, Stax soul, Motown and hip hop. Yeah....it's all there.
Here's another nice review from Rolling Stone....
Hey Curby,
Thanks for thinking of me!! The song starts out with such a Motown vibe, love it. I don't own any Gary Clark yet, thanks for the post. The first time I heard him perform, I think was the blues performance at the White House.
My dedication to Angela.....
This is what gives me hope for the future of music I love. Killer!!!!!
I think Gary is ace and remember when we did the blues tent at Austin City Limits 2003.... I really hope that they don't skip too many steps in the equation.. Too much too soon does not bode well and sets you up for the sophomore who gives a F%^K ( not even a slump anymore) He is a talented and nice cat who deserves the long term shot... Go Gary!! The tornado awaits but be careful !!!

I remember I heard a lot about him when he was a young kid playing the blues in and around Austin. He seems to of exploded onto the scene recently. I guess the first I saw of him on the big stage was Crossroads 2010. Interesting to see if the exposure he is getting will actually help him break in the new Paradigm of the new music business. I really liked the EP but not sure about the LP. If he does break into the scene dominated by the Black Keys and Jack White as new blues artists then there is hope for others. The last artist to get some hype and fail to gain traction were Los Lonely Boys. Of course they were their own worst enemy. If Gary can take advantage of this jump start but stay grounded and still do the hard road work needed to keep that audience engaged he should be fine.
It seems like I first heard about him in 2008 and got his self-titled album that has got the soul track "Things Are Changing" that's been redone in Blak and Blu. Checked him on the web and really liked what I heard. It was a long time before he resurfaced again acting and playing in the film Honeydripper and then the EP last year.
Like Joe and Jim point out, the Biz can be hard road and you can lose your identity dealing with major label marketers. The criticism he's received with the new album is the multiple styles he's trying to jam onto one record. Personally, I believe this guy can play anything he wants and he'll do 'em all well. There's not many people with his ambition and talent walking around these days.

I Dont have the album but liked what Ive heard on Youtube so far.The multiple styles thing can be a mixed bag.Just my thoughts ,but if you go too many directions it might confuse where to market. It might be better to limit it to two or three. But it is cool he can excell in so many forms.Im not saying its bad ,cause in the past you dont see ot happen for a new emerging artist that I am aware of.If you heard a cool Hendrix type song and get the album and dont like soul ect,you might feel a bit peeved that you bought it.Or visa versa.I would bet that there are many that like the fact that he "peppers the field" so to speak.I personally have liked the different styles .
I've been looking forward to this album and I downloaded the deluxe version with 15 tracks on iTunes without even listening to any clips - based on the strength of his previous releases.
I like most of the album a lot. The bluesy stuff with crunchy guitars I love. I like multiple styles so I don't have a problem with that. For me though, there are a couple of real head scratchers on here. I have a feeling I'll remove 2 or 3 songs from my playlist in iTunes because I don't think I can deal with them. Other than that, there's a lot of great stuff on here. I recommend if you're downloading, listen to the clips first and see what you think.
He's on the Jimmy Fallon Show now, playing with the Roots. I think he's also playing a song at the end. Cathy
..thanks Curby! ...will be listening out!
Unfortunately the album is not available in the UK as yet.
According to Amazon UK: Available for pre-order. This item will be released on 4 February 2013
If anyone fancies a swap with something available only in the UK, let me know...

Thanks Jane! What rock has she been hibernating under?! She don't know Joe (a blues player) who is the (continually) next "big thing" and has been mentioned amongst those names a while now, even by those who'd once ascended to near "one-hand" status themselves (in her defense, we seem to be plagued with youthfully driven but grossly under informed or aware journalists and communications media personnel...)???!!!
Decent interview, but come on! And I am beginning to worry about a possible promotional tidal wave (Joe knows), not against his success, but wondering how many others are desperate to puff their pockets up...not sayin' it's what's up, I am going on first smell only (my nose only, not somebody else's nose or opinion necessarily). Maybe I mean promotional myopia by the media instead...which might not be such a bad idea from Gary's management, in a good sense, as opposed to the media myopia going counter productive to management's intent or worse, Gary's own best interests, with his best interests getting battered around with chatter he doesn't cozy to...just rambling my thoughts, sorry!

I caught Gary Clark Jr, Bright Lights on Palladia while waiting to watch Joe at Beacon Theater, again. I was immediately hooked. I just received Blak and Blu along with Afterglow. I am in music heaven today.
Take care,
Bill
Blak and Blu in the post from .com - can't wait. Thanks for the top-tip Curby.
