Topic: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

Gary Clark released a hot little EP today called  The Bright Lights.  Apparently he's caught Clapton's attention and here's a vid of him and Doyle III at Crossroads.  Good stuff.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

We missed Gary's performance at Crossroads last year because we were catching Joe on the Ernie Ball stage, but when I finally saw the two songs "Bright Lights" and "Don't Owe You A Thing" on video I was extremely impressed.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

Ive heard some chatter about Gary and think he is excellent..  For my money if there has to be a savior it will be Dan Auerbach and the The Black Keys...  I am completely enamored with their sound.  Its sophisticated and ramshackle at the same time.  Its complex blues with an edge and depth to the lyric.   I am a recent convert but I think they are ace.  Gary reminds me of that school of playing and singing.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

I caught Gary Clark at Crossroads last summer....

He was fantastic...I bought one of his albums and he covers a wide variety of blues...He goes from Delta Blues to Soulful Smooth R&B all in the same album...

He's fantastic...

I agree with Joe about Dan Auerbach... but I believe Joe B will be the savior of the blues.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

No savior needed: the blues is more alive than ever! But it´s always good to be informed about "new" artists: never heard about Gary Clark while I love The Black Keys.

I gets enamored sometimes...  I like this stuff.  Some Austin.  Some Motown.

Jeff - Some's coming your way.  Also forgot to mention Steve Cropper released a tribute album to one of his influences, the 5 Royales and that's pretty tasty too.

Further research into Gary and I found he acted and played in John Sayles' Honeydripper.  Pretty good stuff and think I'll be renting it soon.  Here's the trailer...

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

I had a listen Curby, he sounds very good, with a great sound. I'm going to try to pick up some of his stuff.

I agree there's a similarity with the Black Keys who certainly are one of the bands bringing the blues to a younger audience. Like Gunter I'm not so sure about the term savior though.

Yes I do think he could be one of those guys. He's a great player, a fantastic singer, writes great songs (I wish I had written Bright Lights) plus he has this quality about him that you can't take your eyes off of him. I got to see a bit of his set at Crossroads before we hit the sidestages, and I didn't want to go (luckily the mains screwed up and the sound went dead, allowing me to go catch Joe's set  tongue ) His performances on the Crossroads dvd are one of the big highlights in my opinion. He just has this thing where he's just freakin' cool. He makes it look so effortless. This is one you'll be hearing about for a while. This guy's got some big names talking about him, Jimmie Vaughan, Clapton, Doyle Bramhall II, etc.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

Wouldn't like to see anyone saddled with such a moniker so early on.

And as Guenther eloquently said, does the blues need saving. For me 'the blues is alright' and doing very nicely.

Gary Clark Jr. seems to fit right it. Great voice and great chops. Thank you (again) Curby for the heads up. I'm going to be buying his stuff. Dan Auerbach is on the list too now. I've been a bit quiet on the purchases of blues recently what with BCC, and I'm rediscovering Mellencamp in prep for a tribute band project. But I need some blues now.

Thanks again.

Thanks for that, really looking forward to it. He had the London crowd transfixed at Hyde Park in July, including me. He started the set with an explosive 11 minute song!!

I'm really looking forward to this album too. I've seen a couple of his US festival appearances streamed on Youtube and he was sensational. Hopefully some UK/European gigs will be on the horizon.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

I thought the new album was coming out later, but Blak and Blu came out last tuesday and like the title says this is one fine gumbo of blues and soul.  The blues offeringings are mean, crunchy and head turnin'/boppin'.  Tremendous cover of Hendrix's "Third Stone From the Sun", "Numb" leaves you just that and "When My Train Pulls In" is simply cutting edge blues.
The soulful/funk/guitar efforts are simply superb.  On "Please Come Home" imagine Smokey Robinson in his prime fronting Joe Bonamassa.  God, what a sweet solo and song.  I could go on and on, but I hope a few of you get the drift.  First person that came to mind here is Angela - girl if you read this trust Curby and get it!
So far I haven't got through all of it, but haven't heard nothing filler yet.  "Things Are Changin'" sounds so Motown and schweet.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

Gonna have to get it on import.

Re: Gary Clark Jr - Is He The Blues' Savior?

All I've heard from him is brilliant. I don't have the new album, but I have the old 9 song EP he released before 2010, which includes a good portion of songs on the new album, like Bright Lights, Please Come Home, and several others (Don't Owe You A Thang is also on there). Dude is freakin' amazing.
