Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Two more thumbs up here.

Jocelyn listened to it first and pronounced it his best in years. I'm listening to it now, second time through, and it's good, straightforward bluesy-rock.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Okay, I think I've had enough time to digest this. I will start off by saying I think this is one of my favorite three albums of the year, the other two being Dust Bowl and the Foo Fighter's Wasting Light. Yes, I think it's THAT good. I love this cd. Whoever said there wasn't a whole lot of great guitar work, I completely disagree. What about Yer Blues, Oh Pretty Woman, Dark Side Of Love, Round And Round, The Wire, Strut, Butterfly? I could go on and on. For the record, Yer Blues freakin' cooks. I knew as soon as I heard Kenny was going to do this song it was going to be awesome. As far as the production, I'll let others debate what sounds overdone or not. To me, it doesn't sound like that at all. Noah's vocals are amazing on this album. I've really missed him being the lead singer. But Kenny's vocals sound really good to me on the couple he sings. Cold is actually one of my favorite tracks on the album. Their harmonies work really well together too. Take Come On Over for example. Just great harmonies. This album is amazing and I give it a great recommendation. Kenny's back!

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I'm down with Deezer, I never knew who Joe Bonamassa was till I was @ a Kenny Wayne gig in SF one night and saw some cat wearing a Harley logo Joe shirt. Kenny was knockin' my a$$ out long before I ever heard of JB. I think they are both accomplished players in their own right and really hate seein' any bad feelings here. I doubt Joe would ever dis Kenny & vice versa, so do we need a contest??????????????

Going for the live KWS show in Shreveport tomorrow night and will give a full report.  What I've listened to of the new cd, I like most of ... there are always songs I like more or less (even on Dust Bowl for example) and that's just my personal taste, no offense to the artist!  wink

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I played some of the new album for my wife last week and her problem was with the vocals.  That surprised me.  I've listened to alot of the songs a few times now and will stand by my first impression that this isn't one of his best.  Different strokes for different folks though.

Which vocals? Kenny's or Noah's?

I did the same with the opposite effect.  My wife was very impressed on the songs that Kenny sang lead on and she's always been a fan of Noah (who sounds fantastic on this imho).  In fact, she turned me on the KWS many years ago.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

It's okay album. I prefer his earlier albums.  It is for me missing some of his fire. I didn't really care for the production of the songs. I could see alot of the songs getting a reworking and sounding better.  I think they will sound better live than on the album. I like some of Kenny's vocals once in a while or when he backs-up Noah but he's not what I am listening for. I am glad he has another singer.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I thought it was okay. I always kind of expect more out of this guy. Don't get me wrong, he's got some chops, but he never really grabs me. It's probably his best album but I think I've heard far better so far this year. Whereas other young guys like Joe and Derek Trucks really get me with their leads, I just never get that feeling with KWS. He's better than a lot of the stuff out there today but I found myself not all that intrigued by what he's doing here.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

listening to it now at work, will keep an open mind but Never Lookin Back sounds like just another Stones rehash. It's not bad but doesn't blow me away. I really do like Kenny and own the 10 Days Out vid, it is classic blues with many people on it who are now dead. Dark Side of Love sounds very decent.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I don't even understand why they went with Never Lookin' Back. In my opinion, they should've gone with something else like Butterfly or The Wire. Those are way cooler in my opinion.

Track 12 - "Who's Gonna Catch You Now" gave me chills the first time I listened to it and still does. Personally, for me it is possibly the best track on the album.

This is the only track on the album that I skip.  hmm
Funny how opinions can be so different. To me it was a track that had a decent melody, but the lyrics was starting to date KWS as a "married man with kids" instead of "firey young guitar slinger" with something to prove. Not that either is bad or good.

I'm glad others like the track because it makes it valuable on the album. If everyone didn't like it, that would be terrible.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I attended the Kenny Wayne Shepherd concert at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee this past Saturday. Simply fantastic show. The new songs sound even better live. the rythym section of Chris Layton and Tony Franklin is just a monster. Fantastic. I have NEVER been dissappointed by a live show from Kenny.

Whoa!  I just was KWS last night.  That was Tony Franklin?  I didn't figure that out, I only knew it wasn't the bass player I had seen the last few times.  Maybe if he would have played in his signature fretless style I would have taken notice.  Or maybe if he would have sported that teased 80's hair I remember . . .   wink

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I think it's Kenny's best album. I like every song on here.... That is RARE for an album the last decade or two. Especially one that contains 17 tracks. It's more produced that his previous work, and I think it's aimed for more radio play than what he has received before. But the guy has plenty of stripped down stuff that you can listen to. It's not shocking to see a guy hitting his mid 30's and wanting to do different things. I think it's his best overall album to date. Although, I hope he doesn't push this direction to the point to where he becomes Jonny Lang who has pretty much fell off the wagon as a blues artist.

My favorite song would probably be "Heat of The Sun". This tune would fit good into a Micheal Mann action thriller. It's great a great mood to it and I think it's the best song on the album. The track I probably like the least is "Cold". It's just lacking a bit for me. But this album is not totally void of stripped down stuff. Yer Blues, Strut and Anywhere The Wind Blows somewhat fits in with his older stuff. There is a lot country influenced stuff here.  Overall, it's hard to tell if Kenny is just looking for more airplay, or perhaps trying to please everyone (including himself) with this CD since he took such a big hit for his last album.

Overall, I think they're the collection of written songs that he has done.

Here are my favorites:

Heat of the Sun
Come On Over
Show Me The Way Home
Anywhere the Wind Blows
Darkside of Love
Round and Round
Who's Gunna Catch You Now?
Yer Blues
Strut
Baby the Rain Must Fall

Funny he played all fretless basses in Milwaukee. I was near the front and got a good look.

Kenny's playing at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Friday Sept 30.  Got me two tickets for that one.
