Topic: Need help folks

So, I was building up a stratocaster from some old fender parts I had and a new body, bridge etc.
I got the bridge in today and drilled for it. It seems a couple of the holes are roughly .25mm out of place. Meaning the bridge sits the tiniest bit off.
Can anyone think of a way to fix this? Other than finding small alder dowels and drilling out and plugging the holes for a redrill?
Cheers

Re: Need help folks

I would plug the holes and redrill.

Does the neck sit loose in the neck pocket?
You really want the neck to fit really tight into the neck pocket of a strat.

I'd recommend a blade runner because it seems it will line up better

I drilled the holes for my strat, and the low E rides the top edge of the frets past the 15th fret, and it really makes me mad! I just found a goldie body, so I'll be having my luthier do all the holes for it. wink

Re: Need help folks

The neck is in pretty snug yeah. Though I'll recheck everything tomorrow.
For me it was the high E sitting slightly off on the upper register.

Re: Need help folks

plug it and re-drill if you're not happy. It's not worth it to put the effort in and ultimately not be happy with the final product. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Need help folks

It's a guitar that you're going to play, not a crappy 6th grade woodshop project.  Drill the hole wider to fit a small dowel pin or something and do it the right way!  Don't settle for anything else!  -S

Re: Need help folks

Problem is, getting a dowel A) small enough (so that I'm not drilling a hole too close to the cavity) and B) the right wood.

Re: Need help folks

This is sort of another work around...

if it's a six hole standard trem only use two screws and not  all six. For example, I only use the two outer holes.
Depending on what hole was misdrilled it could fix your alignment issue.

Re: Need help folks

Can you not mix sawdust of a similar bit of alder and glue, and use that to fill the holes? We used to do this in wood work at school. Are you going to paint it? If so it doesn't really matter if your using the right wood to fill.

I wouldn't think that small amount of wood difference will affect any tone?  But I guess even if you filled the hole with a toothpick or 2, wood putty on top and sanded flat, the new hole might be so close that you get into the original hole?  I don't know, I have seen some pretty thin long wood dowels at a craft store before.  I was also assuming you're going to paint it and not stain it?

Re: Need help folks

I have managed to fix it. Thanks for all the posts though (why I love this forum)
I removed the neck and bolted it back on and held it tight as hell as I did. Seems it must have been the tiniest bit off when bolted on last time.
Seems NPB was right.

It happens! (both) sometimes they get bolted on slightly crooked.

Other times... I can be right! cool
thanks for the update!
