Topic: Building the Bona-Board: Progress Report

So, I stumbled onto a sweet deal recently on a Marshall Class 5 combo, and decided to assemble a pedal board similar to Joe's concert rig to go with it.  As of now, I have the Fulltone Supa-Trem, the JBF3 Fuzz Face, and the Way Huge Pork Loin (just won an eBay auction on one earlier today).  My regular pedal board has a Fulltone PlimSoul that I was thinking of using to cover the TS 808 territory, but the new Way Huge Green Rhino pedal is priced awfully reasonably and, mindful of the liner notes from Dust Bowl (which lists "one of everything" from Way Huge), I think I might give that one a shot.  Any input from current users would be appreciated...

As for reverb, my favorite local shop carries TC Electronic pedals, so as soon as they get TC's new Hall of Fame reverb pedal in stock I'm planning to A/B it with the Boss RV-5 Joe uses.  Hope to have a decision there by the end of this month.  The delay pedal on my regular board is a Wampler Faux Tape Echo, which I love, but it is a little spendy so I'm looking at the Boss DD-7 and maybe the Digitech Hardwire DL-8 (it gets great reviews, and I love the build quality of the Hardwire pedals I already own).  Haven't found anybody yet who sells that little Whirlwind phaser he's got, but the search continues...   wink

By mid-June or so I hope to have a rig put together that will enable me to sound just like Joe...if Joe suddenly lost all his skills!    big_smile

Why not a DD3? I've heard that the Electro Harmonix Reverbs are good too.

Why not a DD3?

The DD-7 is Boss's newer, more flexible/capable model.  Among other things, it has stereo input/output, and a modulation function (I love the modulation feature on my Faux Tape Echo).  I haven't had a chance to play with a DD-7 yet, but I wasn't wild about the DD-3 I demo'd last year...

I've heard that the Electro Harmonix Reverbs are good too.

To be honest, EHX offers so many 'verb pedals that it makes my head spin.  And the reviews have been mixed.  Joe can have anything he wants, and he picked the RV-5.  Only reason I want to try the TC Hall of Fame is that the reviews have been raves, and it appears to have an additional feature or two for the same $ as the Boss...

Thanks for the link!  $130 is a little spendy for a one-trick pony like a phaser, especially since I'm not even sure how often Joe uses his, but if I decide it's a must-buy I'll be sure to throw my business your folks' way...   wink

Hey Coach305 I'd maybe go with a delay pedal OTHER than the DL-8.  I have owned just about all of the Hardwire pedals, (Chorus and Reverb are excellent) and they are great but the delay is a bit metallic sounding.  I sold mine..  It has great features, and really is a very nice pedal, not horrible sounding but it could be better.  The delay isn't warm enough for the Bonamassa sound.  It sounds pretty nice with a clean amp, but when any bit of distortion is added and you'll hear a bit of harshness in the delay trails.

The carbon copy (own it too) is another obvious favorite but it is Very dark sounding, almost unrecognizable with distortion..  It's a little more pronounced when placed in front of an amp, but again I'd maybe try something else.  Joe's delay is more digital sounding with a bit of warmth.  Vox Time Machine is pretty nice.  I'd also vote for the Cathedral Reverb if I was in the market for another verb.  AND, it seems to work well when placed in front of the amp too.
