Topic: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

Hey
The driftin' sound of Dust Bowl, sent me back to the 60's. At the time I was playing a Tele Custom out of a real Twin Reverb. Ya Ya I kick myself everytime I think about them being gone, but hindsight is 20/20.

Anyway,I'm hunting that sound again. True spring reverb and tube's I think is what did it. Twins are long outta reach anymore, and it's only me and myself at the house. So here's the question. Looking for a new amp, what I have looked at so far in the Marshall Class 5, great tone, but no verb.  sad ,Bugera V22,sounds good, but I have no knowlege of them. Pevey Windsor, ify. My son always liked his Carvin's,his is still in his room, but it's an SX -200 thats solid state. While it's got awesome power, the old tube sound is just not there, and even with his Pod I still can't find it..

Maybe a pedal ?  In the picture of Joe's setup for warming up,there is a pedal sitting on it,anyone have any idea what it may be ?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

I think the pedal is an Ibanez Tubescreamer (Ts808).

Guitars: Epiphone JBLP, Epiphone Les Paul Custom
Amps: Marshall Vintage Modern, 18 watt clone

Hey Thanks Jimmy for the try,but T.S are green, this one was yellow. hmm

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

OK, if you don't have the Twin Reverb anymore... you might be able to get another one.
OTHERWISE, the Roland amps like what Albert King used to play have an awesome clean.
A straight up Fender Hot Rod Deluxe might get it too... clean and bright.

I would steer clear of Bugera. From feedback I have they aren't road worthy and not made the best.

Blackstar makes really good amps though... I'd try one of those.
For Peavey, I'd go used or new... any of the "Classic" Tweed series: 30, 50, or 100 watt versions.
Gibson has a 2x12 Lab Series that BB King plays through... solid state and on the cheap used (discontinued)
Vox AC30 would do the trick as well.

Those should be enough choices for a ballsy amp!

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

Hey Thanks for the comeback. Since I don't play outside the house anymore, thats one reason I'm trying to keep the big $$$ out of the picture. LOL If that wasn't an issue,I'd grab another Twin and be happy as a clam. cool I have seen Blackstar's never thought of them though. I'd like to just try a few ,but where I rest my head is miles from a music store. The only one we do have close, only keeps,Peavey's,Fenders in stock.

Is it possable to get the deep reverb without finding one with a true spring reverb ? The reson I thought I should stay away from solid state was, I thought tube's were what made the Twin have the tone I can't get out of my son's Carvin.

Thanks Folks

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

Blackstar has a nice reverb... and an ISP that goes from US to Brit by dialing a knob. VERY versatile. I suggest trying one!

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

Well, if the Fender sound is what you long for, why not a new Princeton Reverb?  Small enough for the home and killer sounding with a Tele. Check this tone out:

Look again. Its a TS808.

I would look into the Jet City amps or the Blackstar amps. Both make nice little combo amps. The Blackstars are especially cool because they have the ISF Knob that can make the amp sound like an American amp or a British style amp.

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

I love my Jet City JCA20H.....great dirt....and they now come with reverb and effects loops...not a fan of the clean though. But there is more than enough gain on tap for everything from blues to heavy metal.

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

Another inexpensive idea might be to buy a Marshall Class 5 and Tweed Blues Jr and play them together with a tubescreamer and delay pedal up front - might make for a nice dual amp combo.

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

Great folks thanks for all the come backs. Has anyone, tried a boss pedal,I saw it today in the MF catalog. It's called a 63' or 65' Fender Reverb ? I wonder how this would do with a the
Class 5 ,and a tubescreamer ?

Re: Dust Bowl and New Amp Question

I just came from the Carvin site, why is it we don't hear to much about them ? My sons(RIP) SX is a solid state amp,but man that thing sounded sweet when he played through it,but he wasn't looking for the sound I'm hunting.

  Their Nomad's have,EL44 drivers and 12AX7's. The 16,is the size I'm wanting.Hey Vai like's em.

Carvin is made in the USA which is good, and there is no middleman so you get a good direct price.  I don't know what the deal is if you need to get them fixed, but I would assume a good amp tech could fix one.  Steve Vai can play any amp he wants to and he chooses Carvin so I'll bet they are up to par.
