Topic: Standard Jazz III or XL?

Just curious on which Joe uses? I'd always thought he used the XL for some reason but I noticed people seem to talk about the picks you could buy from the store on this site as

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

I think his is the standard size.  I tried them but couldn't keep a grip on them XL's are the exact same pick but big enough for a guitar player of lesser skills to hang on to.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

Joe's red picks are exact size of the red Dunlop Jazz III picks.

His sig. ones say JOE BONAMASSA in very small one lined type across one size, which I think gives it better grip than the original. The regular ones rotate in my hand more for some reason.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

Interesting. Not sure why I thought he used the XLs.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

I saw lots of comments from people saying they struggled to keep a grip on them when i was first changing to them, so i went for the 'Max Grip' Jazz III. They have lots of ridges moulded into the gripping surface, and i have to say theyre the best pick ive ever used.

Guitars: Gibson JBLP Studio, Gibson LP '58 Reissue VOS Washed Cherry, Gibson LP Standard Ltd Edition Manhattan Midnght Blue, Gibson LP Custom Black Beauty 3PU with Bigsby, Gibson SG Standard, Fender Telecaster Jimmy Page Custom.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

defo a re-branded Jazz 3, - my 12 year old son has one straight from Joe's hand, - well via the floor first! Said son is desperately trying to learn to hold it tucked up as Joe does when finger picking. Not easy.

My YouTube channel with plenty of my Joe's videos dating from 2009 inc his first Hammersmith Odeon ones:

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

I had to switch back to Fender Heavy picks... I couldnt hold the small Jazz 3 in my fingers.  It was too small for me.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

I swapped to Jazz IIIs a while ago and it took a while to get used to them. I now use the eric johnson signature jazz IIIs as they are not as slippery, for me anyway.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

Joe's picks are Jazz IIIs made specifically for Joe. I don't feel any difference in the regular store boughts from JB's. I use the one's from the tins I've gotten in the past. I don't want them as just a keep sake. That's a waste in my opinion.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

I'm a huge fan of the EJ jazz III's...they just feel right and have killer grip

I've been using mine as well. I like em.

Might have to look into the EJ jazz III's

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

just putting in my $.02 -  in a recent magazine interview with Yngwie he said that he uses a pick that's over 1 mm thick (can't remember the exact details). He said that at the speed that he plays, there is a noticeable delay through the amplifiers and cabinets that annoys him when he uses thinner picks. At my playing speed, that is not an issue!  lol

He uses 1.5mm dunlops, I have the same ones.  They are my favorite as well..  He prefers the stiffer picks because they won't flex when he speed picks the crap out of his strings.  That flexing causes unwanted noise and also can hinder speed so a stiff pick is better.  I agree with you that at my speeds as well, I don't have much of an issue but the noise a thin pick makes when raking across the strings I do find annoying.  But I guess when you're as fast as Yngwie you can do what you want!  I never heard of him claiming a delay issue, thats a new one!

Eddie Van Halen uses light picks, and he is no slouch on speed.
I think this all boils down to voodoo and personal preference.

I too think a lot of it is personal preference but then again, EVH doesn't play nearly as fast or quite the same style as Yngwie.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

Yeah but Eddie is one of those guys you could listen to all day, can't say that about Yngwie.  Don't get me wrong I think the man is incredible but 20 minutes of it makes me start thinking "This guy would be awesome if he knew how to play more then one song!"

This is interesting. I know that both Paul Gilbert and Buckethead use REALLY thin picks, like .6 mm of something crazy thin like that, and they both play extremely fast.

Re: Standard Jazz III or XL?

Hmmm,
When I play blues shuffly stuff, like SRV' Pride n Joy, or a Funky thing, I prefer a softer pick that flexes a bit, because if you use a jazz 3 pick for fast strumming, your bound to get caught in the strings or get the pick flying from your pickin' hand.

Other than that I love the Jazz 3, BUT, it does have a slightly thin tone so I'm looking for a little thicker pick.... any to recommend?
