Topic: Weber Beam Blockers vs Plexi Shield

I had 4 beam blockers in my 4x12 Cabinet. The cab was loaded with V30's.

I didn't like the sound, and I'm not sure if it was the V30's or the beam blockers. So I took them out. I did notice that the rear loading speaker was mildly touching the metal bracket of the beam blocker, most likely changing the tone of the speaker.  sad

My new cab with EVs I'm going to try without the beam blockers and may go to a plexi shield. I don't go that loud when I play, and the EVs are not as "ice picky" as the V30, so I may get away with not having to use anything. If I intend to try the Beam Blocker again, I'll do so without using the same screws as the speaker. I might try attaching the beam blocker heavy duty velcro or something between the wood and the grille cloth to avoid interference with the speaker.

I made a plexi shield for my Blues Jr, and it seemed ok, making little impact... whereas I think the beam blocker did a little more "spread" on the beam, although I felt the need to turn my amp up louder with the blockers in vs. keeping it the same with the plexi shield.

I love the idea of the Beam Blocker because it's less to carry from show to show... and the plexi gets all scratched up over time.

Re: Weber Beam Blockers vs Plexi Shield

I have no experience with beam blockers but the shield helps your microphones pick up more guitar sound while blocking some of the other noises out.  It cuts some of the high end and overall volume down for 'you' since you're standing in front of the cabinets, but I don't think the main purpose of the shield is to enhance the overall sound for the audience.  It's more like a sound containment measure..

I'm guessing beam blockers are more for those who don't necessarily use a microphone and rely on the cab for overall sound coverage so you don't want to block any of the sound, just the high end.  Could maybe work together if you find your sound is still ice pick'ish and you could use the beam blockers and throw a shield in front and crank it!
