Topic: Joe technique

Hey everyone:)

Hope you are all well! I wanted to ask a quick question regarding a trick Joe does in nearly every solo he does. I'm talking about where he kind of rakes his pick against the strings to fill a gap in his solo when no notes are being played. The problem is, I can't work out what strings he is hitting!

Thanks very much!:)

Re: Joe technique

That's interesting isn't it?  It looks like he is sweeping the open 'A' and 'D' strings, but that song is in the key of F, so none of the open strings technically should ring correctly.  Perhaps he has retuned the bass strings on that guitar to suit the key of this song?

Re: Joe technique

It looks to me that he is just playing in normal tune, but just hits al strings open. if you listen closely you can hear to year own guitar if you play all strings open it kinda sounds the same? but I'm not sure...

Re: Joe technique

He does the same thing when he really winds up the solo in Blues Deluxe (album version).  It sounds cool if you just let all the strings sound off for a split second and go into another lead phrase.  Especially when you're getting good feedback.

Re: Joe technique

Gary Moore did that a good bit also. Look at some of his live vids.

Re: Joe technique

I do this too... it's just raking all the strings open, especially the wound strings. It keeps your solor from drying up and it allows you to switch positions without having to do a run.
