Topic: Good trade for '56 customshop gold top vos?

Hello all...

Let me know if this is a good trade...?
A certain piece of returned jewelry insured for $7500 that I paid $5000 for and jewelry stores would offer little more then $2k.

I brought up an offer to TRADE for a 56 custom shop Gold Top VOS?
I know the gold tops sell new for less than $4,000, and a guy I offered is asking $2200 for his.

Should I hold out and try selling the jewelry for $3400 and accept $3000? I've been trying to sell it for a while on craigslist, and have only had one serious biter, and fell through. Trading it for this GoldTop could get me something I can play and it could possibly go up in value in a number of years.

hmm

That does not sound like an equitable trade.

Re: Good trade for '56 customshop gold top vos?

Yeah but your going to be sitting on this item until the sales go back up.  Really the question is how much of a loss are you willing to take?  Right now your at half its value and could get something that will be of use to you.  If it was me I would sale but I think its not an even trade you'd be getting screwed but thats alright as long as your cool with it.  But yeah I would do it.  You could be sitting on that jewelry for years vs. enjoying a sweet sounding P-90 equipped VOS Les Paul NOW.  Yeah I would totally trade.

I think I'm looking at how you only get 50% back on what you pay for jewelry.
If I hang on to the Gold Top, it could eventually go up in value, and hold at what I paid for it (used).

So there's the thing about used jewelry. A jewelry store or pawn shop or whatever, will barely pay you what the value of the materials are worth. The gold, precious stones etc. The value of gold is very high right now, could go higher or could go down.  Guitars on the other hand have taken a bit of a hit due to the current economy. Guitar values will go up again.

Whatever the story behind the returned jewelry is...I bet the guitar will put a smile on your face everytime you pick it up. big_smile

I guess it all depends what is more valuable to you, the ring or the guitar. Me? I wouldn't accept half value or less for the ring. There are always ways to get your money back. Good Luck.

that's ring resale value for ya.

Well, the guy ended up selling the gold top right away, so I guess this case is closed.

I don't care if it is closed.  Get rid that ring for a sick LP if you jam a lot.  Take the hit on it.  Jewelry is only as valuable as the buyer (like most things) but you have no use for it.  Get a sick a*^ guitar and keep rockin.....LOUD!!!!!!!

Sad story, but used jewelry market is as fickle as the used guitar market, probably more so.  If there's a woman involved....aw shucks, save it for the next one (if it's what I think it might be, after a few dozen years together one little white lie can't kill and shouldn't even hurt at all if things are what they, hey, should be otherwise)!!! Some guy with GAS, emphasis on the GUITAR for the G, might be in the market for what you offer if he is overstocked on nice guitars and needs to (finally!!!) make his gutsy  roll move.  I can only wish...
Good Luck!
