Topic: Ames show

I'm  a new fan - I've only  known who Joe is for about a month now, but I am SO glad I went to the show tonight.  It was amazing!  I had several "good God this guy can play moments, especially when he got out the acoustic-electric.  I've never heard anyone play like that in my life.  AND he can sing.  I'll be front row next time!

My sister went to the show in Sioux Falls.  She had never heard of him, but her reaction was the same.  Her comment was "At one point in the second solo stint I couldn't really believe what I was seeing and hearing."

Needless to say, he has two new fans here.

Now I just have to work off the buzz I still have from the show so I can sleep.

Re: Ames show

LOL, let me be the first to welcome you and your sister to the Forum, linmic, as we say here, you have just been BONAPTIZED!  big_smile

Re: Ames show

I've known Joe's reputation for awhile, mostly through frequent mentions in guitar magazines, but had no idea what I was missing until I stumbled across the RAH concert on a PBS broadcast last December.  Instant fan after that, of course, to the point that I bought an Epiphone JB Goldtop guitar...and I've always been a Fender guy!

I have attended many, many concerts in my life, usually with high expectations (I'm picky about going to live shows, so if I'm going it is usually to see someone I'm a big fan of already), but I can only remember three or four where the concert far exceeded those high expectations.  Tonight in Ames was one of those.  Except for the occasional idiot shouting/whistling while Joe was playing a quieter passage, it was two and a half hours of pure joy...

It was certainly one of the most honest concerts I've been to in years...just four guys all about the music, without all the projection screens, flamethrowers, and other modern trappings.  Joe never left the stage during the main set, and was only offstage briefly before the encore.  In that entire time prior to the encore (18 songs by my count), he never so much as took a sip of water that I saw.  Amazing voice...

I had intended to keep track of the set list/guitars used to report here, but about halfway through "If Heartaches Were Nickels" I was enjoying myself so much that I put my notes away so I could concentrate on the experience itself.  Sorry.  Maybe someone else will post it (someone with the band, perhaps?), but I can tell you the the new stuff from "Dust Bowl" is killer.  The intro to "Django" was also a highlight for me; Joe played some strange but beautiful stuff there...very moving.

If this tour comes anywhere near where you live, do yourself a favor and don't miss it.  Joe told the audience tonight that this was his first visit to Ames, but that it wouldn't be his last.  I hope that is the case.  If he comes anywhere within driving distance of me again, I'll be there unless I'm in a coma or six feet under...   wink

Agreed.  The shouting did get a little annoying.  Someone was yelling about something "sucks".  He did it a couple times but I never caught what exactly he was saying.  Was he complaining about one of the songs???  I'm just glad everyone on stage ignored him.

A warm welcome from me, and to the house of Joe, Linmic. Have you explored Joe's full discography yet ?

Re: Ames show

Welcome to the forum linmic and you too Coach305.
Warms my heart to hear from people experiencing the buzz of their first live JB show.
Although mine was in 2004, I can pull those feelings back up as though it was yesterday!
Show #30 for me tonight...and it NEVER gets old. REALLY looking forward to hearing the Dust Bowl stuff.

Re: Ames show

I attended my 1st Joe show last nite. I have Bonamassized. Cy Stevens is an awesome place to hear a master at work. My son took me to show, the simplicity of the show was incredible. I could not believe the presentation of so many guitar's and cool light show. I agree the acoustic set stole the show. His presentation and endurance of each instrument was awesome. My son plays acoustic in 2 bands and was amazed at his talent. His voice was clear and not even a break to moisten! wow! The black box was cool - something different I had never heard of. The idiot yelling was a couple rows behind us sucked...stay home next time moron. Great show,     Joe and crew....I will see you again...thanks!

Re: Ames show

Last night was also my first Joe show and I was there with my Dad "Nitro" hey dad!  What a great venue, I haven't been to Cy in many years so going back for a show as awesome as Joe was amazing.  He totally floored me live, I have seen him on HDNET doing a Live DVD and stuff this summer, that's when I first heard of him so when I won tickets to see him last night I was very excited and he certainly didn't disappoint!  The highlight of my night was when he busted out the acoustic-electric to play a solo song/jam.  I haven't seen anyone play the guitar like that in person, ever.  He is such a stand up guy, playing more than 2 hours straight with no breaks and not even a sip of water!  Dude is not human!  Anyway had a blast at the show and I am really glad he came to Ames especially since he plays all over the world.

Does anyone have a set list of the songs he played last night? I would love to see it!

Here are some photos of the show I took last night

As I mentioned earlier, I had planned on keeping track, but got caught up in the music early on and stopped taking notes.  Now, a little less than 24 hours later, there are still so many highlights swirling in my memory that there's no way to recall precisely.  Near as I can tell, though, last night was virtually identical to the Sioux Falls set list (http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn38 … G_5690.jpg) from a couple of nights earlier.  I do remember "Django" being near the end, but other than that...

Perhaps some of the more seasoned Bonamaniacs who were there last night can fill us in...   wink

God, how we love it when we hear Bonabaptism stories like this! Takes us back to when we had our own unique experiences. Welcome one and all!!!

I'm sure that Patty, Bill, Lee, or Warren will provide the set list.  wink

Re: Ames show

cool Well, my brother, friend, and I all saw JB for the first time live Saturday night in Ames.  WOW!  There were countless impressive moments in every song.  The last person I saw live who gave me my money's worth like this was Bruce Springsteen. The difference between Joe and Bruce is that Joe started right on time and Bruce typically starts 45 minutes late.  2 1/2 hours of pure artistry and professionalism. No breaks for Joe except before the encore and I didn't witness him taking one sip of fluids.   Very few artists work as hard as Joe does to give you the best show they can muster.  Joe has conditioned himself in such a way to separate himself from former greats in blues lineage.  And it just wasn't Joe, but his band was also phenomenal.  Joe's attention to detail in planning and execution of his songs is next to none.  All three of us were totally impressed.  The gentlemen with me are both decent guitarists, but were totally impressed by Joe.  After listening to the acoustic Woke Up Dreaming solo, we were all bowing to a true descendant from the guitar gods.  It was a delight to experience Joe live for the first time with two people who appreciated this as much as I did.  The concert was everything I wanted it to be and more.  Damn, I can't wait to see him again.   cool

Not yet, but I plan to get started on that over the next few weeks.  Right now the only one I have is the Live from Royal Albert Hall Cd.  I can't wait to hear the others.

Linmic & Sis, Coach, Nitro & son Nickynystrom (hey Nicky, nice strumming by that Joe guy, huh?), jkgolfer, glad one and all had an amazing experience.  Joe & his band cook!!!  Big time. Welcome to you new recruits.  As Amsterhammer sez, we LOVE to hear the reactions of those going with whatever expectations.  Especially the family, and friends who "used to be" decent guitarists!  lol  Just kidding 'em, they know exactly what I mean, and I know exactly how they feel, and the first impression  yikes garnered.

Re: Ames show

Okay, there's lots of albums to choose from (TBOJH and LFNIP would be good starters) but let me put in a word for Joe's A New Day Yesterday, Live DVD (available through the store) ... it's an electrifying stage performance by a younger Joe (10 years ago) that one has to see to appreciate how long the guy has truly been rocking!  cool

Noted.  wink   I'll move it up to the top of the list with Dust Bowl.  He played one song live that I can't find -  "I've Got My Eye On You" (??)  I can't find it either because that isn't the name of the song or it's on a cd that doesn't have a track listing.  Anyone know what song I'm talking about and which CD it's on?

The name of the song is "You Better Watch Yourself". It will be on "Dust Bowl".

Re: Ames show

Been working on my iTunes playlist of the show, and I'm pretty convinced it was the same as the Sioux Falls show, with the addition of "Django" (right before "Mountain Time," I think).  I've got "Dust Bowl" (the song) downloaded (thanks, Joe!), so now I'm just waiting for the album to drop so I can get the other two songs in there ("Slow Train" in particular kicked my behind!).  Since there's no available version of "Young Man Blues," the playlist will only have 19 songs instead of the 20 he played, but sooner or later there'll be another live LP, eh?    wink
