Has anyone played any of the Fender Mustangs?  Yea, yea, I know it's not tube, but it's been getting good reviews as far as modeling amps go, kind of like the scanner/printer/fax all-in-one of affordable amps.

Jim

How do these stack up against the Peavey Vypyr's?
I've got a Vypyr 15 and it's really good to get you started.

However, I'm wanting to move away from the modelling amps and am also interested in a small, low watt tube amp that can take 'phones as well. (Don't want to wake the little 'un up.)

I recently built a germanium fuzz pedal (BYOC ESV Fuzz. It's great) that I think would sound much better run through a few tubes to open it up a bit more.
EDIT: Fuzz pictures here--->  http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/ … mp;t=29359
I want to build more pedals too.

I've looked at the VOX AC4TV, especially for the 1/4W setting, but no 'phones output.
Marshall Class 5 looks good, but has it's problems. The MK2 due soon looks better but is way too pricey ATM.
I've even looked at building my own from a kit (eg, ampmaker.com) but these are also quite expensive once you factor in the cabs etc, plus my carpentry skills are zero...I couldn't even nail 2 bits of wood together to save my life.

Decisions...decisions...

What The Fuzz ?!

Re: Amp for a novice

check out the Mesa TA-15.  Lots of nice sounds from this one and at different power levels.

So I go and get the JB Epi and I have a tiny P.O.S. amp.  I'm thinking I would like something with a nice tone, but not to ostentatious.  I'll probably never be good enough to gig, just want something that sounds nice in my home.

Any suggestions?  Would like to stay in the $500 to $1,000 range

Like someone else said, you can get a lot for $1000--especially if you buy used.
Peavey Classic 30's are good sounding amps and can be had for a few hundred bucks. Nice cleans, warm overdrive, reverb, & effects loop.
Fender Hot Red Deluxe has good cleans & reverb. The od channel is unusable to my ears though. A friend bought one of the limited edition Texas Red models. It has a Celestion Vintage 30. The speaker made a huge difference. Sounds very good.
The Marshall Class 5 has gotten favorable reviews & the clips I've seen on youtube are excellent.
What tones are you shooting for?

I would try out a Marshall Class 5 a small powerful Tube amp. Really has the marshall drive.
