It might seem stupid but even though I am looking right at it even in slow motion, I can't quite duplicate what he is playing...
I know the song, as my band covers it but I would love to start it the way he does with that killer riff !!!

It's really not too hard to get the pattern down.  He's basically just using the d power chord with some variations. His left hand is staying in one spot other than the descending melody at the end.

Robert Randolph is chucking some pedal steel simultaneously, so that might be some of what you're hearing over top of the guitar; and possibly mistaking it for part of the actual guitar riff.
