Re: Dallas, TX

Fan Friggin Tastic! Show! very intense....
Joe started out acoustic with on Palm Trees, Helicopters & Gasoline and then Tal joined him on conga & bongo drums.
Together they did Seagull and then Dislocated Boy.

I can't remember how many more with just the 2 of them....
Then Carmine and Rick joined and they blew off the rafters with Slow Train...I thought my heart was coming out of my chest!

Ryan McGarvey was wonderful & did 2 songs. He was the only guest.

I really wish I could elaborate more, but all I can say is the energy was very high and focused and people were so excited.

Afterwards, I saw Joe and told him that some of us would love to see he and Jim Suhler and said said he would like that. I gave him some "redneck" stemware...its a mason jar attached to a glass stem like a wine glass and he thought it was a more appropriate gift for Tal LOL! I told him was for his trip up to Oklahoma because they drink out of that sort of glass....nobody tell Jim Moody!

Get ready Y'all cause this tour is gonna blow your socks off!

Re: Dallas, TX

This being my first opportunity to see Joe live I was completely blown away! I was a bit surprised to see the age of the crowd. Saw plenty of grey hair and beards (I fit right in). My son came along who at 25 was among a smaller portion of the crowd. The folks we sat next to have seen joe four time and will be going to NY to see him at the Beacon Theater. Anyway he said it would blow me away and he was right. The acoustic set was terrific, the guest is someone I will keep an eye out for and the close of the show was too cool. Anybody know what piece he played prior to leaving the stage for the encore?

I am kicking myself. How did I miss spotting Joe for so long? I have Owned a copy of Bloodline since their debut but some how missed the connection!

Re: Dallas, TX

Every time I have seen Joe, I walked away thinking that was the best performance I've ever seen him give and last night in dallas certainly fit that description for me.

To set the mood... The 3,500 seat Music Hall was filled to capacity.  The lights go down and ...what???  Two Minutes to Midnight is replaced with a Country/Bluegrass version of AC/DC's Highway to Hell.  It was absolutely on point.  Did a little interweb search and the band name is Hayseed Dixie.  Perhaps it was only for the Dallas crowd and will be changed for other shows, but the crowd in Big D loved it.

set list is the same as the asian/australia tour so I won't go into those details.

The acoustic set was amazing.  I'm now evern more envious of those of you that got to go the vienna.

So... Joe runs through the amazing acoustic set, then into the electric portion.  Tone was amazing and his voice just seems to get better to me with every live show.  So he's mid set and out comes the red E.S. 355.  I knew somehting good was about to happen.  Joe comes to the mic again and introduces...Ryan McGarvey.  Holy crap!  I've wanted to see him play again since the last Crossroads festival and now here he was. what a special player.  Somewhat shy and standing too far in the back stage right but I guess that's understandable.  They play a slow funky RCFP style version of Look Over Yonders Wall then into Blues Deluxe with Ryan taking the lead on the latter.  Really, Really enjoyable.

Great show and I know that every JB fan is gonna love seeing it.

A few notable absences... No theriman, No Dark Lord Steve Morse EBMM, No EDS 1275 Double Neck (He used the red ES 355 for Young Mans Blues), and no Flying V.

The ear monitors seemd to work well and he kept them in until almost the end of Just Got Paid.  Cleaner stage without the monitors up front.  Looked really good.  Upgraded light's from last time.

As to the new rig and pedal board.  the sound was great to me.  One missed pedal board button during the dazed and confused lead, but Joe seemed to shrug it off with a laugh and an Oh Sh** and moved on.

For me the only negative I could even find would have been with Tal's base drum.  We were sitting stage right, 8 rows back from the speaker stack and the base drum was too high in the mix.  I mean... I love a kick a$$ drum beat as much as the next guy, but after two hours of feeling every base drum beat, it got annoying.  Like I said, it certainly could have been because of my seat location.  Over all, I thought the house acoustics were outstanding.

Great Show Joe!.  Loved it and Thank You for coming to my new home in Dallas.  see ya next time.

Re: Dallas, TX

Thank you so much Mike for filling in a lot of gaps!
I appreciated you & Susan for hanging out with Sully & me.
How about doing the review when we see Jim Suhler at Tolbert's! LOL!

Re: Dallas, TX

Oh yea, forgot to mention...during WUD, this dude rattles off bluegrass licks like he's been playing with Ricky Skaggs or Alison Krauss his entire life.  Damn Joe, is there anything you can't do on a guitar?

Thanks so much for posting the links to the videos. Joe doesn't seem to be wearing his sunglasses. Lights not as bright or changes happening, hmmm?

Actually, Joe forgot his shades, then donned some towards the end of show, making a comment about the lights being too bright, then gave them to a lady in the audience. This from a friend who was there.

Re: Dallas, TX

Doug, don't kick yerself, just enjoin the ride here on out!  Pearl, security is going to be tighter from now on.  Curious if it was not local hired insted of a "new guy".  Way to go Fred, doubling down!!  Tx Sommelier(s)- lost in the music, LOL, yes, it is ok!  Thanks for sharing your experiences, ya'all!  Same as it ever was, but better than ever!

Excellent reviews by all, like them all, even though I am singling out Rockfarmer!! Nice and detailed, just the way I like 'em.  That lowered down lowdown version of Highway To Hell debuted in Vienna and is likely the pre-show song for the tour now.  Joe playing bluegrass licks on Woke Up Dreaming isn't entirely new, as he laid out some countrifried licks on it before years back.  He is sparking my noggin into some dreamin' of a few future things I'd like to see from Joe in the ear future... smile.  So, Joe has moved to ear monitors, huh?  Could be responsible for improving vocals even more I suppose. Hopefully he really likes the results.  Probably impedes wearing the sunglasses comfortably? Mike, I doubt it was just your location regarding Tal's kick drum.  He has a furious sledgehammering attack often, and those loud and punchy low frequencies bend around any obstacle to fill space.  Additionally, probably your audiologist's hearing response chart for you has enough high frequency losses to have the mix content of them blurred and sonically obscured to exacerbate your displeasure. sad

Fantastic that Ryan McGarvey played along, I am sure both songs he joined in on, especially Blues Deluxe will absolutely and totally (temporarily!) satisfy my thirst for Ryan-Joe collaborations...Thanks Cathy, time to check out all those links!!!  Jane, I still remain doubtful about your hope.  Mine would be he plays it acoustically one fine day.  What's the Lance Lopez mumbling 'bout?  Expecting him to open, guest slot, or just be attending in the audience?!?!

Anyone have the full setlist?

Joe has a new tour manager, maybe this is who people were thinking was security?

Actually someone near me threw them up on the stage after Joe commented that he forgot them.  Joe never saw the toss and Rick scurried over and picked them up and gave them to Joe.  After the show, Joe gave them back.

I've seen a number of shows and this was the best - when the ES-335 block comes out is really a treat.  I think he used it when Eric Johnson sat in in Austin last year.

All in all a great show.  Depending where you sit in the Dallas Music Hall acoustics can be a hit or a miss.  I agree with the earlier comment that Tal's kit needs to come down a bit (lot), particularly the kick.  This one guy's opinion was Carmine's was a bit muddy, but Joe and Rick's levels were perfect from my seat.

First show of the tour, new rig, new lights, slide instead of the therimin [kudos], neat acoustic start.  Thanks for the great show.

Re: Dallas, TX

Thanks Rocket for your observations.
As for the sunglass issue, it was a case of absent mindess on Joe's part and when he mentioned "if your looking for some (I think he said Bozo) in a suit with sunglasses, then you will be disappointed". At that point, the man in front of me throws his sunglasses on the stage and Rick picks them up and hands them to Joe.
Joe eventually takes them off and puts them on an amp behind him. His guitar tech brings out another guitar and gives Joe his sunglasses. and as Mr. Beck reported, a lucky lady in the front row got the Joe sunglasses.

With the security issue, I really feel it was someone attached to the venue because he claimed we were in HIS secure area. At least that is what I hope.
There were only about 25 of us middle-aged delinquents waiting for Joe and this wasn't our "1st rodeo" on how to behave and form a single file...the comical part was that they really didn't know what to do with us and kept closing and opening the gate!

It was never a dull moment! ;-)
