Topic: Sweet Lead Boost
I use old Fender Blackface heads because I can never crank a Marshall enough to hit the sweet spot most of the time. But an old Fender head, good speaker cab, and a Fulltone OCD version #3 is hard to beat for great crunch tone at a moderate volume. For a lead tone, I add a good chorus and a Keeley DD-3, and hit the OCD with another drive pedal (Tubescreamer, ect) and the results are good. But the tubesceamer before the OCD doesn't give enough volume lift to stand out in a band situation(Tube screamer sounds bad after the OCD!). I have finally found a couple of pedals that I can place AFTER the OCD to get more sustain, increased mids, and a volume boost, and still maintain great tone. Although very pricey, a Rockbox Boiling Point works very well after the OCD for a good mid boost, volume boost, and sustain with clarity. The second one that works well after the OCD is the Fulltone Robin Trower Overdrive. It is darker than the Boiling Point but still gives a good mid boost and volume increase. If you have struggled as I have to get your leads out there in front, you may want to consider one of these pedals AFTER your main overdrive pedal. There may be some cheaper alternatives out there, but these are two gems I have found in a long, expensive search.
