Topic: new old pedal day

Ok so my buddy just gave me a few 80's boss pedals. A od-1  its an e series from the board. A cs-2 a dsd-2 and a psm-3 power supply.

Do you guys have any background on these? If so could you give your opinions. Do you think the od-1 will sound better as a thick sounding lead boost than my ts-10.

Thanks in advance.

Re: new old pedal day

Check the back. If it was made in Japan (vs. Taiwan) it may be worth some money to you. Nothing like a '59 Burst, mind you, but the old Boss Japanese-made circuits are regarded as better-sounding.

They are all the old ones made in Japan. They date from 84-87

Just give them a blast...if they're not up to scratch on the sonic front...move em along. Simple.

Re: new old pedal day

i agree

DSD-2's in a envelope addressed to me  wink

Re: new old pedal day

I'll try them out this weekend. I'll bet the dsd-2 sounds better than my my newer model dd-3.

I read somewhere that the older boss units need a different power supply than the newer ones. Is this true? I currently run all my pedals on a pedalboard. I don't want to screw them up by using the wrong ac adapter.

SgtB,

Those older Boss Pedals are great!  big_smile  Some of the older Boss pedals used an ACA120 power supply, it should say on the back what it requires. The ACA120 is an unregulated 12 volt power supply that is then dropped down to 9 volts by a resistor inside the pedal.

I tried using a standard 9 volt PS on my old Boss CE-2 and it will barely light the led. The Voodoo Labs Pedal Power and many other PS's can handle the older Boss Pedals just fine.

Here's a link from BossArea.com explaining about it...

Re: new old pedal day

I still have the Boss pedals I bought new in the 80's:  Chorus, Distortion or Metal pedal, Compressor, Super Phaser, DD2 Delay, power supply pedal and the best of the bunch....DM2 Analog Delay.  All of mine run on stardard power supplies or 9v batteries.

I only use the DM2, but now that this got brought up, might pull out Chorus pedal for sound check.

Re: new old pedal day

the way to get round it is to daisy chain it of another 9volt dc pedal. i did this with my OD-2 via the power out on my polytune. LED came on and everything worked fine. this is true for power supplies that have non isolated outputs too.

Re: new old pedal day

So I tried the od-1 and the dsd-2 through the class 5 and the Gibson today. Very nice combo for leads. A very full thick warm overdrive.  I still want to compare these with my current setup side by side. Didn't have time today.
