Topic: Is this a deal?

Hey all,

So I'm shopping CraigsList and I see a black Gibson SG Special for $400

1. back of neck is sanded to raw wood
2. weird dimarzio pickups
3. a little beat up
4. dot inlay

Is this a deal? It's been up for a while.
I thought it might be a good "mule" for testing the humbuckers I wind. Yet I see used ones like this and not as altered going on eBay for $499...

Re: Is this a deal?

No, I don't think that's a good deal. If you pay about 130 bucks more you could buy a new one at a guitar shop.

Re: Is this a deal?

It's a SG Special, new about $1,000,  used in good condition $500, beat up.......doesn't look like a deal to me.

Re: Is this a deal?

Nope now if you can get it for under $300 it might be a good deal.

Re: Is this a deal?

whoops, made a mistake here, a new gibson sg special doesn't cost 630, that's in euro's, sorry!

Re: Is this a deal?

I would pass on it if it is that beat up.  I bought one used but minty from a reputable store for 475 a few years ago.

Re: Is this a deal?

$400 is a lot of money in my mind, and you worked hard to earn it I would assume.  This POS guitar doesn't sound like it's worth any money.  Seriously!  Me personally, I'd rather spend 400 on something new, even if it isn't a guitar.  Maybe a small amp, or a pedal or two.  You know you're not going to get close to that 400 back out of it if you decide to sell it in a year.  -Seth

Re: Is this a deal?

It might not be a good deal but a fair deal.  I had a SG Standard that I swapped pickups out of and bought it for $1200 new in 2001.  In 2007 I sold it for $800 and always felt like I let the best Gibson I ever had go for way too much of a loss.  I guess that was a fair price but honestly its my SG all over again everybody wants something at a great deal and because it isn't a les paul they can get it.  My advice is contact the guy and try it if he'll let you.  Then haggle with him.  If you don't like the price of the guitar for the playablity of it then you don't have to buy it.  But if you pay him cash I bet he could come down to $350.

Re: Is this a deal?

If you buy it, you have to seal the raw wood on the neck.  I know it supposed to be cool and help you play fast, but it also lets in moisture and if you're lucky the neck will only warp and not crack.

Re: Is this a deal?

Here's one you might want to think about...

http://cgi.ebay.com/2002-Gibson-SG-Cres … 27b7ef52a5

The Crescent Moon SG's were only made in 2002-03 so that makes them somewhat rare. They are incredible guitars, I bought one 2 years ago for $525. They have excellent necks with a 50's profile and an ebony fretboard. It sounds a bit brighter than my SG Standard, I'm thinking that's from the ebony vs rosewood. They have kind of a satin finish, not faded but not gloss either. Definately one to think about.

Includes a case! Free shipping in the US as well...

I see it's gone already...hopefully someone on this forum snagged it big_smile

Re: Is this a deal?

HERE'S another deal I found.

yr. 2000 1957 Custom Shop Reissue VOS GoldTop
$1995

I can jump on this too... I see them going for over $2k on ebay. Is this too good to pass up?
The guy doesn't need to get rid of it, but he found a deal on another guitar he doesn't want to pass up.

Also, I already have a black '72 Custom and a '97 Classic Plus... Do I NEED a GoldTop? or is it the G.A.S. talking?
The money isn't an issue.

I agree that Gold Top is a steal.  Buy it and if you don't like it put it up on Ebay and turn a profit.
