Topic: The Movies

It seems during the holidays my family ends up going to the movies more and this year is no exception.  Thought I'd give my two cents for two films I saw this week.

True Grit - Jeff Bridges does his best to revise the Duke's Rooster Cogburn, but comes up a tad short.  This version is truer to the book and indeed has more grit than the original, but lacks the heartof its predecessor .  Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are pretty much wasted in their roles and the real star of the film is newcomer Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross.  I'm thinkin' Oscar'll be knocking on her and Jeff Bridges door soon.  Anything the Coen brothers do is always interesting and their Grit won't disappoint.  Three stars (outta four).

The Fighter - I really like Mark Wahlberg as an actor.  He was real good in Shooter and here gives another bravura performance.  In fact all the actors in this gem are perfectly cast.  This film is based on a true story and is lovingly retold with the best fight scenes I've ever seen on the silver screen.  Wahlberg is very convincing in his part and had to train big time to pull off his role.  As a co-producer I wonder if he regrets letting Christian Bale portray his brother.  In a role with as much edginess as Dustin Hoffman's Ratso Rizzo, Bale doesn't steal the show, he owns it.  He's always been a good actor, even as a child in that Speilburg movie, but The Fighter will win him a best actor Oscar.  Don't take the kiddies to this one cause there's more than a few f-bombs.  Three and a half stars.

This movie has been promoted alot and looks very interesting.  I'll probably wait for the DVD release.  I love historical pictures.

I liked the clip and those are two good actors.  My next visit to the cinema will probably be to see The Lincoln Lawyer.  Michael Connelly is one of my fave authors and the trailer for the film looks good.

Re: The Movies

Nowhere Boy wasn't shown in my city and had to wait for the DVD release yesterday to finally see it.  I'm a sucker for these type movies and this one didn't disappoint.  I never realized what a dysfunctional childhood John Lennon had.  The film side-steps sentimentality and avoids being a footnote to the music.  Here's a clip from the end of the movie where The Beatles record their first song.

Here's Paul McCartney performing the same song

Re: The Movies

As a general rule, I watch very few movies, but this weekend my wife suggested we watch the movie "Social Network", the Mark Zukerberg - Facebook story.  I found it very interesting.  Jessie Eisenberg was a very beleivable Zukerberg and, while I'm certainly no fan of Justin Timberlake, but he did a very good job portraying Shawn Fanning, the founder of Napster.  I'm sure there is quite a bit if literary license in this movie (as in all of them) and I can't even say for certain how much of it is accurate as I have not researched it and am not a member of facebook, but I found the movie quite interesting and entertaining.  Worth the $4.99 On Demand fee

Good luck to Colin Firth,  Helena Bonham Carter & The King's Speech tonight!  smile

I don't think Colin needs luck this time.  He's easily my pick for Best Actor winner.  My other picks are:
Best Actress - Natalie Portman is the favorite, but I'll go with Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone.
Best Supporting Actress - Melissa Leo in The Fighter.  It seems like Ms. Leo is in every movie I've watched lately.  Great charactor actor!
Best Supporting Actor - Christian Bale in The Fighter.  In a film with great performances Bale towers over the cast and his fellow Oscar competitors.
Best Film - Winter's Bone.  This movie is what the cinema is all about.  I strongly suggest seeing it if you missed it.

Re: The Movies

I haven't seen them all, but agree that Colin Firth was stupendous and I'll be very surprised if he doesn't take home best actor. It also wouldn't surprise me to see King's Speech take home best movie.
The Fighter was a really good movie, Christian Bale was great and I could see him winning for supporting actor.
Social Network was also very good and seems a front runner for best movie. Of the three, I liked King's Speech the best.

My wife and I also saw Black Swan...she loved it, I HATED it. I started looking at my watch after about 25 minutes. If I was alone, I would have walked out. I will say the Natalie Portman did a wonderful job playing her role, but this was just too artsy, too "out there" for my tastes. Bordered on absurd IMO.
