An hour and forty five minutes of kill-em-all-and-let-God-sort-em-out the lad lived up to his old Smokin' Joe moniker.
Opening with ZZ Top Just Got Paid Today, which sugued into a lengthy jam that wailed through some glimpses of where the night was headed. Have mercy.
Not for the faint of heart, the guitar tones were stuff 6 string junkies dream of. Joe ran the gamut from buttery oh, to twang, liberally dosed with buzzsaw. His volume knob work on the Strat was ethereal, and contrasted well with the kneel on your shoulders and let drool dangle over your forehead "It's a New Day Yesterday". Ian Anderson on steroids.
Joe can really get his money's worth from a Les Paul- all were Standards, and appeared new. One in particular, a gold top, had a very distinct nasal quality. Subtle, but cool.
His style is confident- and takes blues scales well off the bulleye- lots of modal stuff, and great interplay with Maui Mark (?) the bass player. He pays tribute to Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, plenty of Rev. Billy squeelin', LOTS of Eric Johnson sweeping (the bell tones were identical) and even a quick nod to Mick Taylor.
I got my monies worth.
Now what to do about my ringing ears.
Thanks for using those baffles Joe.
