Topic: Atlanta- Feb 8

An hour and forty five minutes of kill-em-all-and-let-God-sort-em-out the lad lived up to his old Smokin' Joe moniker.
Opening with ZZ Top Just Got Paid Today, which sugued into a lengthy jam that wailed through some glimpses of where the night was headed. Have mercy.
Not for the faint of heart, the guitar tones were stuff 6 string junkies dream of. Joe ran the gamut from buttery oh, to twang, liberally dosed with buzzsaw. His volume knob work on the Strat was ethereal, and contrasted well with the kneel on your shoulders and let drool dangle over your forehead "It's a New Day Yesterday". Ian Anderson on steroids.
Joe can really get his money's worth from a Les Paul- all were Standards, and appeared new. One in particular, a gold top, had a very distinct nasal quality. Subtle, but cool.
His style is confident- and takes blues scales well off the bulleye- lots of modal stuff, and great interplay with Maui Mark (?) the bass player. He pays tribute to Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, plenty of Rev. Billy squeelin', LOTS of Eric Johnson sweeping (the bell tones were identical) and even a quick nod to Mick Taylor.
I got my monies worth.
Now what to do about my ringing ears.
Thanks for using those baffles Joe.

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

Absolutely.
I can proudly say I survived eight Syracuse winters (and CNN is making like it's news that they get snow in Upstate, NY- that's where God invented snow) and knew of Joe when he was this many years old, blah, blah, blah. He was clearly gifted then.
He is truely a musician and an entertainer, but mostly a bluesman.
If you were at the show last night what was the really heavy funk number after It's a New Day?
Jim
PS; Ears are STILL ringing

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

I can't remember song order...the only thing that I can think of that could be "heavy funk" that he played last night would be "Bridge to Better Days" I love that tune...

The intro medley was AWESOME...don't forget nod Gov't Mule's "Mule" lick he threw in.....

This was only my 3rd time seeing Joe, but it was the best shredding by far!

A+

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

Thanks for that

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

WHO OPENED FOR JOE?

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

Crosby Loggins- their acoustic set- percussionist, Crosby and Paul something or other- a fabulous violinist. Definitely an outfit to keep an eye on. Crosby is Kenny Loggin's son, and had some great stuff. Great opening act.

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

It's Saturday morning and my ears are still ringing.  I made the mistake of standing too close to the PA at the right of the stage.  Didn't want to move because I had a clear view of Joe.

Simply awesome.

Being a Les Paul player, it's great to see him using all the LPs.  However it wouldn't matter what he's using.

I'm a recent fan, being turned on by an innocuous internet thread. But I continue to tell anyone who'll listen about how fantastic Joe is.

I ended up with an unused ticket that Joe was gracious enough to sign after the show.

I couldn't help but notice that there were a lot of old farts like me in the audience.

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

It was awesome!!  We came with Roadking & Stacey, and had such a great time!!  We noticed that Joe, Mark and Bogie seem be be playing "tighter" together every time we see them.  Great job, you guys!

We also had 6 other friends come to Atlanta, who had never seen Joe before.  They all loved it, and are planning on coming to Athens next Thursday.  We headed to Jacksonville the next day (took two more new Joe fans!), and caught the show there.  I feel positive that the setlist was the same for both shows.  Both shows were absolutely jaw-dropping fantastic!!  I wrote down the setlist last night in Jax, since it was a seated venue, and it was:

Just Got Paid
Walk in My Shadow
So Many Roads
Mountain Time
Bridge to Better Days
A New Day Yesterday
Miss You, Hate You (acoustic)
Woke Up Dreaming (acoustic)
Django
Had to Cry Today
Starship Trooper
Asking Around for You

Great to meet "the Davids" (A&C) and Liz, Connie, etc.  Look forward to seeing you all at other shows!

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

The Atlanta show was indeed great.  Same setlist as has been mentioned by Kathy.  The crowd was very responsive and Joe and the boys played their hearts out...  It was really packed in the venue, good sound, poor ventalation though (very smokey).  Great to see some friends from the forum too.  Saw the new Street Team logo from Randy, looked awesome...

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: Atlanta- Feb 8

The Loft was a great show, as all of them are. I did get a chance to show Joe, Mark & Boogie the new Street Team logo, and they all said they loved it! WooHoo! I just posted it in the Street Team section, so stop by and take a look at it. We'll be working up shirts and such real soon!

DavidA, was good to see you again, but seems like we never get a chance to visit. We will have to make a special effort next time, to get to talk some more!
