Topic: JB Les Pauls

Hi Guys,

First time poster - just fairly recently found myself getting into Joe, actually through EC (who I have always been a huge fan of).  Checked out his RAH video to see see EC in Further On Up The Road and actually found myself asking who the hell is this Joe guy because I was blown away.  Find him really refreshing in his playing and just seems like such an honest, humble guy in general.  i thought it said a lot that in his RAH video he would feature his family  - down to earth guy!

Anyway,  I was sort of in the market for a new LP and really thought the Goldtop w/black plastic in the RAH video looked extremely cool.   When watching the recent Crossroads video, though, i also thought the Bonaburst looked killer.

Are the specs pretty much the same on these two guitars (both long neck tenon, weight-relieved, what about neck profiles)?

Any thoughts on these guitars compared to each other - i would actually prefer the unaged goldtop but realize thats going to be pretty impossible to find.

If Joe should happen to see this (and feels like weighing in), I would ask two questions:

1) Did one of your own guitars happened to be weight-relieved or do you, for some other reason, prefer your bodies be this way?

2) I know they are probably like children but what kind of vibe/tone/feel/whatever distinguishes the goldtop from the bonaburst for you?  do you use them equally?

Of course, if anyone else has any thoughts on the above I would be interested in hearing their thoughts.

I look forward to exploring Joe's music a lot more and sharing thoughts with what seems to be a great community here!

P.S. Joe - its awesome having you over at the LPF.  For those of us that play, its awesome to have a musician of your talents participating in our discussions!

Welcome to the forum Journeyman!  Joe's Les Pauls are spec'd out like this:

'57 Goldtop non relief sold mahagany (2 piece body)
'59 neck profile
Burstbucker 2 &3 humbuckers
Nylon saddles
Grover 'bean-shaped' tuners
black hardware

That's pretty much it, the only differences between the JB and a regular Custom Shop '57 RI Les Paul.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

hey thanks - awesome video.

so, the LP's have weight relieved bodies - can someone confirm that they have long tenon necks?

i am fairly certain that they do but the Gibson site actually doesn't seem to specify (though they do specify the weight relieved body - strange).

thanks again - its not a factor in my decision (I have my first JB LP arriving tomorrow:)) but i am curious about it.
