Re: NCAA Basketball

Yes Angela, that was a game for the ages. I didn't want it to end it was so good. It looks as though we all should be shooting for different bracket seeds so there will be a possible head-to-head meetup in the sweetness zone come March. Aztecs have one flaw that may bite them. The team comes out cold shooting too often. Their strength is really the very tough D they play and the way they dominate the boards at both ends. There are a couple of youngsters that are prone to stupid moves as well. Still a lot of games to come so a bit too early yet for crystal ball peering. I'm also waiting for RikEmmetFan to chime in. UNLV has been sputtering this season but are strong. It is a tough conference and a lot of parity has evolved.  It has been a great season with some very good games every week. Rocket is biding his time. I think he is superstitious and posting may be a jinx. lol (I'll ask him this week if I see him at The Spud. I'm still schlepping his BonaVegas Pahrump Joewine around trying to give it to him.)
Rick
edit: Wow, biggest comeback in Coach Fisher's career. Down 14 at altitude in Boise with the crowd going wild sensing a huge upset. Aztecs sucked it up, D started the shutdown with blocks and steals, X got hot and started to put them in,  and with 4 seconds to go he ran in on the pick and roll, the Boise D collapsed to stop him and he fed a wide open Polee who canned the trey ftw! big_smile Darned exciting ballgame. I thought they were done for with 8 minutes to play.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Jim Boeheim!!! big_smile Love him! tongue Almost tore his jacket off!!!  Numnutz' going after him, but the fact of the matter, as usual, Jim Boeheim is RIGHT.  And none of the comments against how he "lost the game" take into account it should have been the basket counts, plus a chance to go back into the lead if the free throw goes...defense can possibly hold onto it, even with 10 seconds left.  Speaking of defense Duke's defense was extremely impressive...but that was no chargeable charge...

You cannot script a new rivalry like these 2 Syracuse-Duke match ups.  smile I like it!!!

By the way, it is NOT Sarah 'Cuse it is 'Seer-Accuse! wink

Local teams  half and half San Diego State Aztecs got totally blown out by New Mexico (Cameron Baritow was a BEAST yikes).  Should join the Orange in rankings drop...Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn...University Of San Diego Toreros on the other hand, finally beat Gonzaga!!!

Angela, McDermott for Creighton is the real deal watch out guy.  Ron Baker of Wichita State is another.  Speaking of the Shockers, they deserve #1 ranking, and hopefully coaches poll won't be rife with jealousy.  These guys had Louisville needing oxygen in the Final Four last year, remember?!  The tourney finally decides, but undefeated this far into the season demands respect or at least acknowledgement they are up and coming at you, whomever your are. wink

Re: NCAA Basketball

Hey Rocket,
It took Boeheim's temper tantrum to bring you out of the woodwork! lol

I didn't see the game, just clips afterwards. For one of the winningest coaches in the history of college basketball, who has never been ejected from a regulation game, I'd have to say Jimmy felt what he felt was a bad call.  And a bad call is a horrible way to end a close game. If you recall the way Syracuse won against Pittsburgh recently, one could say Jimmy cost his team this game.  Ennis is unbelievable, 'Nova got his brother...he made that buzzer beater 35 foot shot to win the game for Syracuse a couple weeks ago against Pitt.

I've read some different things, including that Duke gets all the calls.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Angela, I was waiting and hoping, yes hoping, for Syracuse to lose to somebody, figuring the rematch at Duke would definitely be time and place, BC beat Duke to the punch.  Thank goodness for finally coming down a few notches.  It always meant turning play up a few notches in the Big East, or at least trying to.  I agree about Ennis, he is phenomenal, and always on time with the phenoms.  Some people say everything worked out as the same scenario had played out at that historic and fabulous game back in the Carrier Dome.  Both games were the sport of basketball at it's best.  Including the drama! K pretty much lost it up there, but he is a much more restrained coach, his face almost never changes expression.  Jim on the other hand, a thousand different versions of the crinkled forehead, turned down mouth and hundreds other expressions of disgust just in that part of his face, and of course the arms thrown up in a limited few wtf mannerisms.  But he knows BS, and in the context of the game, at the very least, that was a terrible call.  It is the rule itself in question, and the exact same situation had played out earlier in the game, also at very tense time.  Syracuse got the blocking foul called against them.  Boeheim is a classic whiner, but reserved to the aforementioned theatrics.  I had to laugh when sports reports had the bleep image over his mouth a dozen or so times.  If for nothing else, you could say he played to the crowd.  Did he cost SU the game? TECHNICALLY, lol YES!!! No question.  But he made his point! big_smile. Wrong call, wrong time.  I have a feeling Coach K truly meant it when he was quoted as saying "I applaud him!"  I think he agreeably felt he was reacting to the ambiguity of the rule, or at least the necessity for consistency within the constraints of game "flow.". Remember, these two are Team US of A Coaches, and for good reasoning.  They are both basketball experts.  Period.  And Jim B has taken more than a few cues from Jim Calhoun of UConn!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B12eVCBbGsw
Took a while to get to a game ejection! tongue

I said it before, hate being ranked #1, it is such a distraction (but Wichita State deserves it).  No worries, now we can play real Basketball! smile

Re: NCAA Basketball

Indeed my fears of the poor shooting were realized and all it took was for Thames to go cold, now at a 4 game streak. MWC is a bear at the high altitude schools. New Mexico has always been tough at "The Pit" and now with those two huge Aussies they are very strong. That team wil be shocking some in the dance.
Good luck down the stretch!

A month to go before Selection Sunday. Late season improvement of unranked teams and stumbles by the ranked have the upper echelons in turmoil. Big showdown this week for the Aztecs vs New Mexico who are finally in the top 25. League title on the line and seeding spots as well. Go Aztecs, good luck to the rest of ya.

Re: NCAA Basketball

An exciting knock-down drag-out game last night against UNLV as always at the Connie Mack arena. I bet Bill was in the stands rooting for the Running Rebels. Up until the last couple of minutes the game was there to take for either team as the lead changed hands throughout but Shepherd put the dagger in with a trey at the minute mark and they held on to win. Aztecs now have a winner-take-all vs New Mexico's Lobos for the season title and a possible very high seed in the big tourney. The Show on the Mesa will be a thing of wonder come Saturday.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Rick, you know It! It was senior night, and the fans were rowdy than ever. The Rebels, gave away the game in the first two minutes. Jones pretty much handed the ball to the closest black jersey. The guy needed some stickum or something, he must have had six turnovers alone in the first five minutes. The Rebels finally calmed down and took the lead and the fans went nuts. It was a good old slugfest until the end. Your Aztecs are in much better condition. We ran out of gas at the end.

Let the Madness begin. Good luck.

I was looking for you in the bleacher shots Bill. smile  That was a barn burner, it's always a great match between these two teams! The conference tourney should be a dandy. MWC has some very good teams. Get Roscoe back and you guys have a shot. I was glad he was not on the roster last night because it could have gone the other way.
edit.
The game for all the marbles is on National TV Saturday if you want to tune in. This will be a great matchup. Two ranked teams with it all on the line.

Rick, keep an eye on Christian Wood. He will be awesome with some hard work. He was out of breath, struggling up and down the court last night. He will be a monster next season with the right conditioning. Smith, Wood & Birch is going to be a lethal combination around the boards.  This is a young squad and a great recruits coming in. The next few seasons are looking good for the Rebels.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Hot dog! I had just about written the Aztecs off. Down 16 deep in the 2nd period and dominated by the Lobo's two big men. Fisher switches to a 1-3-1 zone and they stone the Lobos with blocks and steals for one of the biggest comeback wins in Coach Fisher's career on Sr. night. X. Thames was a warrior tonight.  Off to Vegas for the tourney as the conference champ and 1 seed. I have a feeling they will be meeting New Mexico again.
Rick
edit: A most improbable stat, the string kept alive. When the Aztecs have the lead with 5 minutes to go, they have won 116 straight games. They took the lead at exactly the 5:00 mark.

Rebels! Rebels! Rebels! Well Rick, we meet again. I might try to make the game tomorrow. It will be another, knockdown fight between with the Aztecs. We need to win the tournament or our season is over. The Rebels have a chance. Anything can happen. The Mountain West is tough.

Take care.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Your Running Rebs better bring the A game. Aztecs crushed poor Utah State today. There was some conjecture about resting up for the NCAA Regionals in Spokane  where bracketology has them in as a 3 seed, but the team said "We play to win every game." I'll be glued to the tube. This team is fun to watch if you are a fan. Good luck Bill, I know your team will come to play and it will be an exciting game.

Re: NCAA Basketball

I saw that score vs Utah State last night and thought at first that it was for an NCAA women's game. What a blowout! Well, many if not all of the betting houses have taken a number of games off the board, this one included. So the site I use has it listed as a "pickem". Should be a great game, I will be tuned in and ready to watch assuming we get it. Alabama's season ended mercifully last night with a loss to LSU, but we have some really good kids coming in next year. Yeah, just wait til next year. smile

The line Is 4.5 for the Aztecs. I think the Lobo fans will be cheering for the Rebels during the Rebel, Aztec game. I'M sure they would rather play the Rebels in the conference championship. If the Lobos make it past Boise. The Lobos will have more fans at the game than anyone. I am always amazed at the turnout for the Lobos. They have an awesome fallowing on the road. I will be both game tonight. It will be loud!

I wouldn't be surprised to see a large contingent from The Show travel up to cheer on the Aztecs. Tipoff in an hour on CBSSN. Stopped for takeout curry on the way home and cold beer in the fridge.
Go Aztecs!

You had a good turnout, but it is nothing compared to the Lobos. I would say roughly 9000 made the trip from New Mexico. They were holding banner saying Pit in the West and it’s true. The Rebels season is over and I am disappointed. I stayed for the Boise New Mexico and it was great game to watch. I am looking forward to tonight matchup. It will be a good one.

Good luck tonight Rick.
