Topic: Wilco Johnson (Dr Feelgood from the 70's)

Went to see Wilco last night - class. How he manages to play lead and rythem so well (at the same time) is pretty unique. Great show. Should have some pics to upload soon for anyone who's interested.

His playiing was excellent and his bassist Noman Watt-Roy was typically superb (he played and still plays with The Blockheads (Ian Drury et al) Work???? Jeeez, he must have lost 2 stone last night! For bassists - check out his bass line on "Hit me with your Rythm Stick" a classic Norman Watt-Roy riff!

Re: Wilco Johnson (Dr Feelgood from the 70's)

I've been playing with the idea of going to see him in Sheffield, but I don't think I could drag my mrs along. I don't think it would be her cup o' tea.

It seems Wilco is branching out a bit too as he has a small part in a new HBO series (Game of Thrones) where he plays a mute executioner. Inspired casting because he looks exactly as his character is described in the books.

Saw Ian + Blockheads back in the 90's when they were playing at the 'Madstock' Madness reunion gigs in Finsbury Park.
God, that was a hell of a trip. A dozen of us going 150 miles each way in a tranny van (not what you think, statesiders wink  ) with a few crates of beer.  No overnight stay. We nearly died when the lad driving almost hit the central reservation on the M1. It was only a slap on the back of his head that woke him up in time.   The things you do when you're young and stoopid roll

Good times.

What The Fuzz ?!

Re: Wilco Johnson (Dr Feelgood from the 70's)

I believe Wilco was influenced by Mick Green who used to play guitar with Johnny Kidd & The Pirates. Mick's style was very similar in being able to play rhythm and lead at the same time. He was nowhere near as manic as Wilco was in his heyday

Have to say that Wilco looks even scarier now than he did back in the days of Feelgood!

Geoff,

Awesome performer, does he still 'machine-gun' the audience with his guitar ?

When I saw him in Poole (UK) a couple of years ago he managed to change a string whilst still playing the thing !

Re: Wilco Johnson (Dr Feelgood from the 70's)

I sold him some guitar strings (discounted of course  wink ) a couple of years ago when I was in retail. He was a bit 'wired' but really friendly. Top geezer!
