Topic: CAST - Coryell-Auger-Sample-Trio
I don’t really like surprises. Unless they are nice ones. So as part of a double bill advertised as ‘Where Blues meets Jazz’, the second part of the show last night was for CAST to do their thing. I didn’t know them or their music. Only guitarist Julian Coryell’s name was familiar, but in reference to his father Larry’s work.
So, the Coryell-Auger-Sample-Trio was virgin territory for me. They are on a mission to expound the virtues of FLR, which is, apparently, Funky Lounge Rock music to you and me. Signing up converts as they go, and what do you know? They got another one!
I think everyone was damned impressed. OK, with music like this; melodious jazz /funky / soul with guitar effects driven fusion, there can be a real danger of it disappearing up its own backside. With the artists taking themselves waaaay too seriously etc etc. CAST don’t do that. Oh no dude. This music is waaaaay coooool. They are also cool cats and into having a lot of fun so the music is infused with humour. Being jazz(y) there are abstract time signatures and changes of tone aplenty, real light and shade. But please believe me. There is something here for everyone.
That they are accomplished musicians is a given. Coryell is a master fretworker, Sample seems to make a 4 string bass look like he has 7 and drummer Auger is a wizard of restraint and subtlety – except when he explodes into a cacophony of complex rhythms and patterns.
So is it all melodious instrumentals and indulgence? Not a bit of it. They can all sing, and Coryell has an absolute gem of a voice. Soulful with a good range. I think this is a real musicians outfit. These guys give their equipment a damned good work out. Songs like opener ‘Prelude to the kiss’ build up a complex riff on bass that is counterpointed with different riffs on guitar and drums. But it has a great melody and it all hangs together.
Band favourite ‘Nadine’ really showcases incredible musicianship and timing from all 3, whilst ‘Bit by Bit’ is a highpoint (for me) with Coryell on guitar and vocals.
What more can I say? Check them out. You’ll start out unsure but they’ll win you over. Funky Lounge Rock – you’ll dig it too!
