Topic: CAST - Coryell-Auger-Sample-Trio

I don’t really like surprises. Unless they are nice ones. So as part of a double bill advertised as ‘Where Blues meets Jazz’, the second part of the show last night was for CAST to do their thing. I didn’t know them or their music. Only guitarist Julian Coryell’s name was familiar, but in reference to his father Larry’s work.

So, the Coryell-Auger-Sample-Trio was virgin territory for me. They are on a mission to expound the virtues of FLR, which is, apparently, Funky Lounge Rock music to you and me. Signing up converts as they go, and what do you know? They got another one!

I think everyone was damned impressed. OK, with music like this; melodious jazz /funky / soul with guitar effects driven fusion, there can be a real danger of it disappearing up its own backside. With the artists taking themselves waaaay too seriously etc etc. CAST don’t do that. Oh no dude. This music is waaaaay coooool. They are also cool cats and into having a lot of fun so the music is infused with humour. Being jazz(y) there are abstract time signatures and changes of tone aplenty, real light and shade.  But please believe me. There is something here for everyone.

That they are accomplished musicians is a given. Coryell is a master fretworker, Sample seems to make a 4 string bass look like he has 7 and drummer Auger is a wizard of restraint and subtlety – except when he explodes into a cacophony of complex rhythms and patterns.

So is it all melodious instrumentals and indulgence? Not a bit of it. They can all sing, and Coryell has an absolute gem of a voice. Soulful with a good range. I think this is a real musicians outfit. These guys give their equipment a damned good work out. Songs like opener ‘Prelude to the kiss’ build up a complex riff on bass that is counterpointed with different riffs on guitar and drums. But it has a great melody and it all hangs together.

Band favourite ‘Nadine’ really showcases incredible musicianship and timing from all 3, whilst ‘Bit by Bit’ is a highpoint (for me) with Coryell on guitar and vocals.

What more can I say? Check them out. You’ll start out unsure but they’ll win you over. Funky Lounge Rock – you’ll dig it too!

Hi Tres,

Here's the MySpace link. There is an album 'Coolidge Returns', but listen to the mp3's on the MySpace and you can get the feel. They are live recorded in the studio, as was the album I believe.

There is also a live clip/video on the MySpace too which is a good indicator of the style. I think watching this you can understand better the Funky Lounge Rock genre!

I liked 'em. Über cool dudes, pleasing themselves but without arrogance and a huge slab of good humour.

Re: CAST - Coryell-Auger-Sample-Trio

Hi Mike, I've not had a chance to study the links, but the names did look familar so I checked out their backgrounds:

The sons of fusion legends Larry Coryell, Brian Auger, and Joe Sample have formed an exciting and fresh group that is packing clubs and garnering great press. Festivals are really excited about this group. A number of festivals are even booking the two generations together: Coryell, Auger, Sample Trio on the same bill with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Larry Coryell Trio, and Joe Sample.

Julian Coryell has been playing and recording music since childhood with everyone from his father (legendary jazz guitarist Larry Coryell) to Carole King, Jewel and Aimee Mann. An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music, he's also performed with Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock and Billy Cobham. He's produced legendary singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, and recently played to sold out crowds at the world famous Budokan in Tokyo with Japanese rock star Kazuyah Yoshii. Says Julian, “Coryell, Auger, Sample Trio is my opportunity to take what my father has given me and run with it".

Since age 21 Karma Auger has been touring and/or engineering / producing tracks for his father (legendary organist/keyboardist Brian Auger) and a huge list of world class artists including Eric Burdon (The Animals), Robby Krieger (The Doors), Larry Coryell, and Billy Cobham to name a few. His understanding of the business rounds out his musical education which Karma owes greatly to his father. “My father has given me a priceless education and I am lucky enough to work with him today."

Nicklas Sample began his musical education as a young child watching his father, jazz legend Joe Sample. Nicklas immersed himself in the LA scene as a professional bass player, playing both electric and upright with the local talent such as Nikka Costa, Zoo Story, Daniel Cage, Jakob Dylan, Duke Daniels and Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy (whom he has also co-written songs with). He is also the bass player and member of The Crusaders and the Joe Sample Trio. “Joe Sample is the best teacher I could ever have. Im learning from the best."

As much pedigree there as Bloodline!  smile

I didn't know about Julian and will have to check out this band.  I was a big fan of Larry Coryell during my jazz period in the seventies and recently found out about his other guitar playing son Murali Coryell.  MC's gone the blues/soul route and his music's quite good.
