Topic: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

Lots of hype around the BIG Gibson announcement today...
Claiming to "cause an uprising" with the secret but now public release of a new Firebird X.

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/F … ment-1028/

Looks like it has all sorts of pedals drilled into the upper side, and additional switches on the face. I think Les Paul might have liked this one cause of all the electronics. But me??? I think it's one of the ugliest things Gibson has ever made. I hope its comfortable to play, because I don't see this thing flying off the shelves. It barely resembles a firebird.

I'm really confused on this one.  neutral

If you ask me, just bring back the Gibson RD with Moog electronics. That at least looked cool.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

The iLesPaul?

No, I actually expect it.

"Sorry, guys...I've just got someone calling me on the iLesPaul....I'll have to stop the concert for twenty minutes"

I replaced two caps in my Les Paul today with some high grade NOS 50's ones...I just thought..."The men in grey suits cannot make a guitar anymore...when they do...sell your car"

Awful.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

Well, we can disagree Nick.  I think pictures of it looked pretty cool. What the heck is going on with it beats me.  That video link shed less than zero light on the oft-repeated words "attention to detail".The CEO spewing "...Revolution isn't......revolution is attention to detail"???? WTF????!!! Technology that wasn't available even a few years ago??? Give me an effin break!!! Technology flies under the nose radars even of so-called tech geeks.  "Nobody thinks about reinventing the guitar"?  WTF? How does he know? This guy is terrible at presentation.  The jury will be out...Especially if it costs as much as a space shuttle. But ZERO details attended to in that video.
But to me it looks cool, can't explain it but it does.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

Murphy's law: the more complicated something is the more it will break down. Obviously it's not a gigging guitar. Between the onboard effects, the robot tuners, the EQ sliders, etc - something will break at the worst possible time.
I think it's fugly. Street price will probably be close to $4k given the retail figure. For that I'd get myself one of the Bonaburst Lesters.

Major Tom to ground control...

(Reads comments) This is it. This is their 'Gibson Hendrix MkII'...this will go down like an atomic bomb hitting the Titanic.

I'm off to buy a...guitar that works and makes a nice sound.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

I personally find that guitar absolutely HIDEOUS. I really wish they would listen to what fans/musicians have to say. I really want to meet the guy who decided that this was a good idea, so that I could have a heart to heart with him.

You said it brother!  What a disgusting piece of S#!*.  Such a lousy anticlimactic scene when the curtains went up too..  Just awful all the way around.  But thats my opinion.
Just BUILD A NORMAL GUITAR for crying out loud.  What is so hard about that?  You would think since everyone now wants OLD stuff, Faux Relic guitars, Boutique Copies of Old Marshall amps, a new firebird would not have onboard effects etc.?  I know we're in the age of technology but whatever.  I'm sure some people will buy them, and thats fine.  To each their own.  -Seth

It's on Gibson's homepage now

Technology has existed in past years? What about Line6 Variax? LesPaul Robot guitar? DuskTiger?
The auto-tuning Robot guts have not caught on. The Standards I see are starting to come with it now... but I don't see a revolution so to speak there.

I'd really like to play one. Because if it feels good and sounds good- the looks and such don't really matter.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

if it sounds good, maybe (big maybe) i'd record with it. But there is nothing wrong with Les Pauls... if it aint broke, dont fix it. I wonder if people said the same things about flying v's and futura's (explorers) back in the 50's. Maybe in 50 years these robot guitars will be the norm (god, I hope not).

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

I guess I'm not a fan or a musician?  ...I'll have to have a long spiritual chat tonight!
So now we have 2 Gibson guitars guaranteed to flop, huh? Hmmm.  Wonder what the Fender dorks are up to?  tongue
And no one would call Les Paul's (the man) "The Log" cool looking either beside me...

Sound is unimportant?

Technology has been there.  No one had applied it.

Rocket-

I dont think it'd be nearly as bad if it didnt have all those on-board electronics and bells and whistles. Its almost like its taking the intimacy (i think thats the correct word) out of the instrument. I will say, however, that the color is nice haha. It is not mine, or anybody else's, spot to tell you or anybody else what you can and cannot like.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

I vote 'thumbs down' for the Firebird X...Not an aesthetically pleasing guitar by any stretch of the means.  The presentation by Henry was really really lacklustre.  Audience response was totally deadpan, and the outcry on various forums (including Gibson's own) has been overwhelmingly negative.

I think Gibson need to go back to basics, start talking to some real musicians and design quality, affordable guitars that musicians will play, rather that oddities and bizarre collector pieces that will be stored in basements.

I'd be interested to hear Joe's take on it, but I understand that he will have to play his diplomatic card in this instance.

If Joe Bonamassa were to play one and only one great song on one, all you mo'Joes would be swooping them up left and right!  big_smile

If Joe made it sound good, of course many people would be 'jones-ing for one. Isn't that funny.

I think an instrument should FEEL like an instrument... and I think Paul Reed Smith does that very well. I'm still a Gibson man, but they feel like antiques or history to me when I play them - to be cherished. Fenders feel like a bicycle or some sort of thing you can beat on and still have a lot of fun playing.

This new Firebird X looks like it's been routed for pedals around the top horn of the guitar... or has acoustic like knobs on the top. Who said there aren't enough knobs on a guitar? i like EVH's Music Man, only has a vol. knob.

Re: Gibson Announces new Firebird X

A friend of mine has a nice sunburst Firebird, and it's really nice. He won't let me play it. I can't wait to rub this "stepchild-like" design in his face!
