Topic: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

Chad Kroeger from Nickelback is getting his own signature Les Paul. Kroeger has always played Paul Reed Smith SingleCuts

... I don't know why he's playing a Gibson now.

it is a nice looking guitar though

The guy is pretty lucky to get this offer, but it sounds like the guy works pretty hard though. So who knows, maybe I'm being judgemental. I know there's millions of Fender sig. models, but only a shortlist of those who have their own signature les paul... that's a more exclusive club to me.

Billy Gibbons likes the guy. Santana too. He must not be doing too bad.

Gibson are the men in grey suits. They count money first, build guitars later.

I saw them in May - he used an LP then along with the PRS's...

Re: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

I hate to be a debbie downer.... ok I don't hate that.  I just do not understand artist models and the fascination;  I am certain JB's LP is an awesome guitar, and in his hands are a real tool for expression.  But I am not JB and don't want to be.  Surely it may coincide that a famous artist just happened to play the same guitar, designed to the same specs and whatnot that would be most suitable for me;  at least for me 80% of the guitarists I love play LP's but  I cannot make a sound on anything but a Reverse Firebird... This is after owning LP's of different vintages, and several other guitars.  I will never (and no offense to anyone who has a JB LP or any other artist signature model something or other, if it makes you happy and works for you, merry christmas) own a signature model anything.  AND if I see you with a Chad Kroeger LP I will point and laugh.

Re: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

Well, like I've said, if I pick up a guitar and play it and like it, I don't care if it's a signature or not. Certainly didn't bother Joe early in his career that he played a Clapton sig, and I'm pretty sure Joe goes for tone, not the name. I do like that lately, people like Fender put the signature on the back of the headstock, so it's not so immediately recognizable. And I would get a white KWS model just because I think it looks cool with the cross and everything.  tongue

Re: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

Honestly, if PRS, Gibson, Fender, or some other famous/botique guitar company offers you a free line of guitars or pays you to endorse theirs would you?  I would without a doubt.  I have another guitarist I really like who switched from Fender to PRS for the same reason.  They built him his own handpicked and designed guitar and provide free models upon request.  Wouldn't anyone do the same?

If they offered me the opportunity to get my own guit to my specs of course I would take it.  But much like Andy Timmons with his Ibanez, I would  not put my name on it and let the company capitalize on name. I guess I am still part punk rock.  But then again to each their own on this topic.  BUT if I see anyone playing that Chad Kroeger guitar I will point and laugh.

Re: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

The nice thing about this is that is says "Blackwater" and not Chad Kroeger... so yes he designed it, but I don't see his name on it.

Deezer, I played the KWS strat, and that has GOT to be the thickest baseball bat neck I've ever felt. I didn't like it.

Detroit blues, yes of course we would love to accept design offers and endorsements... I'm just surprised Gibson offered him a sig. model and not PRS. Mark Tremonti, Santana = PRS... makes me wonder if he had a falling out with them or something.

Jimmy Page, Joe Bonamassa = Gibson. I just thought he fell into PRS more than Gibson... it was just  a surprise.

Re: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

I personally like some of Nickelbacks work, and the guitar is just another Les Paul with the addition to one thing that some may like Piezo pickup for cleaner or acoustic sounds out of one guitar.  I don't care who's name is on it I'll play it and sound like me.  I still say a Les Paul is a Signature Model and not just a stock name for a great instrument.  If Les hated it like he did in 61 with the new SG Les Paul he would have taken his name off of the thing.  In my opinion to say you'll never play a signature guitar is very limiting and short sighted.  I've owned 2 signature model guitars in my life and I don't own them anymore but they were great guitars.  That is why I bought them and that is why I would buy one again because if it can produce the sound I'm looking for why not play it.  I don't even care if it had the dudes name inlayed on the fret board, if it works use it!  I think the guitar looks great, and I thought the same thing I thought he was a PRS guy.  But when you think about it Joe used to be a Fender guy.

Yeah, I've heard/seen that. Huge neck. But I'll just swap another onto it. No biggie. It's not on my have to have list, but if I came across one for the right price and I was in a buying mood, I'd take it.

I see nothinh wrong with signature guitars. I have 2. A PRS DGT, best guitar I own and a Kenny wayne shepherd start which I love the neck on. I got it used for £350 and it sounds and plays great. Compromise is it came in white with the cross on it. Easy fix, got a 62 reissue body on fleabay and swapped everything over. Best strat I have owned.

Nothing wrong with signatures as long as the parts that make them signature are not in your face. My KWS no longer looks like a KWS just a strat with a massive neck.

I hear there is more and better tone in a thicker neck... according to KWS and some others who like their necks thicker.

I didn't start this thread to "poo-poo" signature guitars. I have no problem with them. I always sort of liked the SRV strat, since friend had one and I enjoyed the feel. I came really close to buying a John Mayer strat. It sounded really good, and felt great. His name was inconspicuously on the back of the neck. I remember being impressed with the Peavey Wolfgang EVH when it first came out in the early 90's too.The Jackson Randy Rhoads model is a magnificent guitar too. ... And of course, if I could afford it, I'd get that JB sig. Les Paul off ebay.

Re: Nickelback sig. les paul (boo gibson)

The issue is not signature guitars.  The issue is buying one for sheer marketing, but that said, I cannot afford signature models of anything.  Again I am certain all of those guitars are fine instruments.  This is 100% personal, and I don't want to overpay for something because it has so and so's name on it.  Anyhow, like I have been saying, if it makes you happy, merry christmas!
